Moving in with strangers

This seems as good a place as any to ask for advice...

Been living back at home with my parents on the Wirral for about a year now after living with some old school mates in a shared house in Liverpool. I've worked in office admin since leaving sixth form, but my mates have all either moved back home after finishing their degrees or moved to other parts of the country. So I don't know anybody that wants to share a flat/house. I'm 23 now, and living at home is not for me, I'm missing out on a lot of the clubbing and socialising that living away from "home" would entail. (And to be honest I feel like a bit of a saddo) I'm not earning a bad wage and could probably afford up to £60-70 per week rent.
Anyway...does anybody know of any good websites or agencies for finding shared properties in a particular area? I would like to meet my potential co-occupants first and make sure we're compatible before making a decision. Are there a lot of single rooms up for rent in cities like Liverpool? Or am I looking at renting my own place?

Any advice or links to useful sites would be appreciated.

there must be a lot of shared housing because of the students etc. But my advice would be to choose somewhere which isn't occupied by people who have just moved out of the parental home aged 18 - they have too many issues to work out.

Check listings magazines, notice boards in record shops, local papers, etc.

Yeah, I'd rather live with people my age or older. Not too keen on living with a bunch of NME reading 18 year old students. There seem to be a lot of sites geared towards buying/renting whole properties, but I can't find any that are just for individual rooms. I've missed the beginning of term (September?) to move in with students anyway.

This sounds like the beginning of some odd couple type sit-com. I can just imagine your face (although obviously I've never seen it) when your new flatmate gets out his guitar and starts bashing out the latest Klaxons "hit".
I must confess I worry for your sensibilities stepping out in to the big wide indiefied world.

Heh...don't worry I'm living in it already, a lot of my mates are rockers, although not fully fleged indie heads.

Im not exactly sure where you are at, but for larger cities in the states ive found craigslist to be not only full of places to live, but also populated by generally cool people. I know there are international sites (like London) but I dont know how large teh communities are.

also a great place to get musical instruments, cars, bikes, but not lovers.

a side note: in england, you pay rent by the week? are there leases? are they year-long?
