there are dozens of versions of this on cd, any recommendations? interested in a definitive version, and then maybe a interesting interpretation or two. thanks.

I like the L'Infonie recording you get on the Reed Streams CD. Quite loose and more 'rock' instrumentation but a nice old racket if you're in the mood.

I'd love to take part in a performance of In C some time.

That's the one I always think of when I think of 'In C' - I have a Piano Circus version on argo that also has a great version of Reich's Six Pianos from about 1990, I think

Aren't there a few examples of rock bands playing In C? I know Pulp were involved with something like that a few years ago and a band here in Vancouver called The Beans once did it as part of their legendary 48 hour long performance.

woops

is not like other people
yeah, there was a 'collective' around called the spawn or the brood who probably played in C

@guys saying let's play in C pm me

I've heard a few and the one that matt posted is my fave, lots of brave ragged hippy optimism

i like the Bang on a Can version. really full bodied and just sounds great. they also recorded Eno's Music for Airports... also good.

but In C is certainly not definitive Riley IMHO... sometimes lesser works (again IMO, and i have lots of them! :p) get championed over the real meat and potatoes... in this case i suppose because it is the piece which fits the "minimalist" cannon best.

but for the real terror and beauty of Riley i suggest Poppy Nogood and the All Night Flight, performed on his "Time Lag Accumulator", a tape loop system, in just intonation... a million saxophone shards splinter and evolve your consciousness. fucking amazing.

or even the later slight new agey Rainbow in Curved Air. all more intersting than IN C i think...

Persian Surgery Dervishes, Shri Camel, Music For The Gift, You're No Good, no doubt others I can't remember - all good / great but they do tend to consist in large part of Tel's individual performance and processes where In C at heart is a portable composition that's achievable by pretty much any group of musicians. Also it was earlier than most of those.

Yeah woops I'm in...

2) Happy End (maybe the best)

As detailed in some editions of the score, it is customary for one musician ("traditionally... a beautiful girl," Riley notes in the score) to play the note C (in octaves) in repeated eighth notes.
Ah, the 60s.

wot Poppy Nogood doesn't rate with you Matt? that is the monolith for me if i had to choose one...

but if there are any microtone enthusiasts, search for Rod Poole at the "waters" link in my sig. hour long solo guitar compositions. i can't praise them enough so won't even try.

Ah, the 60s.

i witnessed Riley playing synth and singing a few years back at his 80th b-day thing :) not a huge fan of his vocal work, but he sounded good. Matmos were cool... while Acid Mothers were embarrassing...

yeah, as massrock said, this is great: 20-minute version of an obscure r&b track. the double-cd i have on organ of corti also contains "poppy nogood" 10pm november 17, 1967.

and just checked some samples of "les yeux fermes," really cool. thanks!

he's very easy to get too much of and agree about happy end, it's lovely.
All night flight too.
There is just something i like alot more about him than alot of the others, maybe its the psychedelic angle and the sound for sounds sake that make him that bit cooler.
