That was when techno had a lot of freedom. Could be housey stuff from 125 to mindmelting analog kickdrum mayhem. Goa/trance and prog house were the nails in the coffin though.
jungle is somewhat of an anomaly in that sense, new breaks or new sample sources or new ways of arranging things need to be discovered for vitality. Whereas with techno it can too often turn into overcomplicated sound design. This isn't an issue for jungle imo.
that's Tadd Mullinix, super underrated producer, although I think his techno is more unique and less overtly retro, just by virtue of it being analog distorted synth tweaking.
