Where should I eat in London?

Darned cockwombles.
He was really good, I sat chatting with him until about 2 in the morning, he used to be part of Les Trois Garcons and just got pissed off with the whole restaurant culture. He was very funny about, after it takes you half an hour to order a bottle from a sommelier in a restaurant, he pours you a thimbleful and (quote) THEN YOUR BOTTLE'S HALFWAY TO ZONE FOUR BEFORE YOU CAN GET ANOTHER GLASS.

If you regulate smack, it can give attention to detail, and people who pay attention to detail like smack because it gives lack of focus. Both are true.

i can think of few 'regular' jobs more stressful than running a restaurant. Just, no. Also the formal culture of posh restaurants...ugh, for both staff and customers.

It's funny though cos he - Arno - has ended up replacing that pressure with another kind - he literally does the whole meal with one assistant right out of a tiny kitchen. I totally agree about the stress, and probably another reason why chefs do smack.

I finally made it to this place last night and I'd say it's as good as the review makes it sound

There were only two of us so we only explored the tiniest fraction of the menu - I think I need to go back with a big group and really get stuck in. Everything we had was really delicious though and the portions were generous and fairly cheap. Plus I saw about a million things go past on their way to other tables that made me spin my head thinking "what was THAT?".

this is what a chinese person told me about gourmet san.

thats sad. maybe my dads getting old, or maybe you just went on a bad day. he was a chef at quite a high standard so his judgement is usually very good.

has anyone mentioned The Silk Road in Camberwell? Unbelievably good house-style cabbage and amazing pork belly.. they also do really good pots of tea, which i sometimes think is quite a good barometer for Chinese restaurants.
