it's pretty good? kinda tough watch, not so much the violence as grinding monotony which is the point I suppose.

it's based on the prison memoir of the guy Norman Mailer got released who then promptly stabbed a waiter to death and went back to prison

@catalog you should check out The Proposition for sure, probably the best Australian revisionist western

great cast, good writing, visually interesting, classic simple premises wed to more psychological man v nature and/or himself themes

supposed to feature a rare relatively accurate portrayal of Aboriginal culture at the time as well

The Proposition is artsy but in the opposite way, super gritty, hard people in a hard land

even a (very) faint suggestion of cosmic horror or maybe more Heart of Darkness

I like revisionist westerns as well, usually the weirder the better (besides Unforgiven which is perfect)
