I just can't even fathom calling New World's themes "as deep as Ned Flanders." The choice between woman (&happiness) on one hand, and greatness, exploration on the other... The idealism of a fresh start, and the bitterness of necessary responsibility, where much that was dirty in the old slate seems to manage to make its way back in, with you now as its vessel, its executioner... these are eternal themes!

I would accept that Malick is very American in that sense, albeit informed (famously) by continental philosophy

America is also big open spaces and beautiful landscapes and mystery and whatever. it's the inversion of strip mall aesthetics.

He is an American artist in the way JMW Turner prefigures shoegaze
