Well put. I don't disagree with that, and don't know the facts and figures. I would say that the tories right now are being more socialist in style than any UK gov for years and years. It's not something they know how to do!

there is no epidemic, it's just the interplay of flows connecting to flows. (paraphrasing henry miller) between us and the virus there is no difference
Lol, what does this even mean?

The overall death rate from covid varied from country to another by three orders of magnitude. I think it's reasonable to ask why that is, and what role is played by government policy.

They haven't even saved the economy at the expense of lives. Nearly 1 in 20 people are now classed as "unemployed." So in pure terms of competency measures, they've done neither of the things they sought to do.
Well the actual, real unemployment rate, including underemployment, was around 15% even *before* the virus arrived. So fuck knows what it's like now.

yeah in personal news I'm getting made redundant in a few weeks because my company wants to axe my job role and replace my full-time position with a contract for 24 hrs a week with overtime "potential." The redundancy package is worthwhile for me because of my length of service but I can imagine there's a lot of people taking the worse job because they need something and their payoff isn't substantial at all.

kin ell - good luck with that! mate of mine who is a meter reader went for it, but got refused cos of the demand in the area, and contract given to the company that used to be g4s, where there's lads doing his job on 3 quid an hour less (they've honoured his current pay).

i think we're gonna see this more and more in dribs and drabs. twin prongs of brexit and covid i guess, but also bigger picture of 30 years of neo-liberal etc etc

my branch is at risk of closure, so if I took the reduced contract and then we closed after 12 weeks, I'd be losing half my redundancy pay. Not worth the gamble. I've been wanting to move on for ages anyway, it's just a total stress because of the state of the world. Hopefully I can get into a call centre for a few months while I figure out what to do next - I always thought if I got made redundant I would take the risk and try to break into freelance music journalism etc but it just doesn't feel like a risk worth taking at this time.

yeah but otoh if you are still young and free of certain responsibilities, it could be worth the gamble. my mates dream was to retrain as a plumber....

Turning dreams into winning gambles would be great but I also don't want to not have rent money or food, that's what scares me.

Oof, that's tough. Best of luck with whatever comes next.

My bosses are giving me hell for failing to achieve an obviously unachievable target at the moment, which actually I'm fine with, because if they sack me for it that's unfair dismissal and I'll take the company to a tribunal, and if I leave because it's too unpleasant, that's constructive dismissal, and I'll take the company to a tribunal.

Shit, good luck mate... one door closes and another one opens and all that but sure it's scary and I wish you well.

I got redundanted a few years back after many years of resisting - best thing ever happened to me.

whereas the hell of being hostage to TUPE transfer is generally to be avoided - working alongside people getting paid less or more for the same job, not good at all

Good luck @boxedjoy sounds like you are doing the right thing.

Bear in mind you can always do casual work and try your hand at freelance stuff too. I've gotta say music journalism is uniquely shit for pay at the moment as far as I can tell but do pitch stuff to The Wire (and maybe try and think about other things you can write about too?)

Stay fabulous and with a vaccine looking more and more likely you could come up smiling in the new year.

A chunk of our team got the same today. Everyone is stressed as fuck.

i am just reading this and i'm absolutely shocked. the article describes the amount of times ambulances in berlin were called for an attempted suicide this year, which has been 294 times so far. in 2018 this number was 7 and in 2019 this number was 3. it further describes the extreme increase of domestic violence and substance abuse. i was expecting a rise for sure, but not in this magnitude. and winter has only started...

it is one of the reasons i'm staying straight these months. i need to stay sharp.
