Record of the Year 2020

pass the sick bucket
COVID has led to comfort listening, found myself enjoying low-brow, totally unchallenging retro-disco albums by Roisin Murphy and Horse Meat Disco. I know, right?

That Roysin Murphy album was so shit, no idea what people saw in it.

is not like other people
i haven't listened to many records this year but for what it's worth this is the best album i've heard for ages.

Horse Lords - The Common Task

Kate NV - Room for the Moon

Freddie Gibbs - Alfredo

Maximum Roach - Dry Rot

All albums I dug a bit this year. Horse Lords is exciting for me as its a psyche rock album that isn't completely dull. I first thought it was obnoxious math rock, too cute, but repeat listens showed all the odd meter arpeggios as part of the same kaleidoscope you get with kraut rock. The 18 minute closer Integral Accident screams Neu. Them and 75 Dollar Bill are doing good stuff with the genre

I listened to this on a loop in early lockdown but I still like it now.

Other than that I listened to a load of Weatherall stuff and pondered his age, my age now and my age when I first listened to Sabres of Paradise.

highly focused scrutinising low-ph cassini spacecraft techno. looks and sounds impeccable. life affirming achievement.

i liked whole lotta choppas as well, and jazzidisciples, and the rocks foe album

I'll never listen to anything on band camp or any other do it yourself platform on principle. It's obviously rubbish.

I haven't been in the right mindset to approach the Roisin Murphy or Horse Meat Disco albums yet, disco when you're not in a disco mood can feel really unpleasant I think, and the past few weeks all I've wanted to listen to is grey miserable sounds
