It's funny when you're a little kid you want the experimental weird stuff then when you get older you want the classics, the stodgy bread pudding of English literature

I'm eternally qauvering in the foothills of Ulysses, Proust, Anna Karenina, Moby Dick... The big boys. Then I retreat, chastened, to the rolling flatlands of literary biographies.

You also want grounding, a sense of the history of the thing and how it all connects and develops

Yeah I'm actually getting that classic thing of becoming more and more interested in history as I get older.

You want there to be a world bigger than your life, the limitations of which are becoming more and more obvious as your possibilities narrow.

It's also that I want to know a lot so I can be an impressive adult rather than a pathetic failure who only just got out of bed.
