It’s shit being old of course I need empathy, you get cold earlier, you have a hot water bottle, people think you smell of piss and it’s not you it’s all the 80+ year olds having a knees up across the nation built up to levels where we’ve collectively forgotten that Britain smells of piss

there was a time ( about 2007? ) when I insisted that Burial may be Blackdown

Burial - Temple Sleeper

this is one of the better later tunes

anyway, so this Burial lad, where did it go wrong?

It was wrong from the outset. the middle class aestheticisation of shabbiness and failure.

jungle was always technical, labour intensive music. right from the days of 4hero and reinforced. The difference is in the development of synthetic basslines. Early jungle had labor intensive beat editing and sample placement with simple 808 or sampler tone basslines, whereas in later techy dnb the basslines were modulated and moving, and just do not sound good juxtaposed with crushing breaks. It's the same reason why there are relatively few examples of acid based breakbeat tunes, because the whole point of the best acid house is playing the same thing over and over again, whilst modulating it. It's why Charanjit Singh was quite bemused when people from the grauniad showed him Phuture - Acid Trax. He said it had nothing to do with 10 ragas, and he was right.

one thing where it went very right i think is that he has totally shunned exploiting his semi-fame. hard to think of others who have done it so fully. specifically refusing to release an 'album' since 2007 and never ever playing live. i've always been impressed by that. leaving the money on the table.

El-B said it's not really a choice. He just can't overcome his anxiety, stage fright, whatever, to be able to do it, even when festivals are chucking money at him. I think it's also not really his thing, but that's apparently a big part of it.

that's assuming he really exists and is not an alter ego of kode nine or four tet.

I've got a fair bit of acid+breakbeat
here's a recent one by someone that also does quite a bit of acid+electro:
