There's also this interesting thing happening to me where the music keeps disappointing me having read what he's written about it but then subsequently the writing makes me hear the music in a new way

One of my notes in pencil reads "Is an orgasm pure?"

You've got MAC and TIK TOK in there which hints at some sort of living embodiment of the digital future

this mackintosh guy just compared mumble rappers to icke-style lizard people, then an amphibian race adapting to the submerged world ushered in by climate change, then pepe the frog trolls in the space of two paragraphs

I'd have opened my review by speculating that Kit Mackintosh is a false name, an anagram of Tik Tok Mac Shni (the last word clearly an abbrevation of SHANGHAI)

He's a Chinese agent sent to undermine our faith in linear rap

What makes me smile most consistently is the audacity of it, the unreasonableness of it

I find the alliteration a bit much sometimes but that's part of the charm of it, like much of the music he's writing about it's actively too much
I love the alliteration where he has Vybz Kartel "..trouncing, terrifying, and traumatising traditionalists...the custodians of antiquated customs and dying priorities in this cacophonous culture war."

Makes me think about how if I'd actually met young thug as was on the cards I'd have probably tried to get to the "Real person" beneath the tattoos, dyed hair, alien voice etc. And then attempted to explain how one thing led to the other.

That's one approach but it seems just as valid and more fun to take him at his word that he's an allien.

Thats where I'm up to - love it. I should really log off dissensus and get on with reading the book

Yeah but hes a fucking ambulence chaser still obsessed with The Smiths and Burial like his shags haven't gone past first year freshers.

Granted this is me externalising my never to be resolved beef with k-punk onto him, but the amount that Kit owes to Reynolds is Infinitesimal compared to Matt's debt to the theory of lost whiteboy labourism circa 1983.

It's better if you just acknowledge the externalisation and leave it at that, otherwise you're no different to a Wire pantshitter yelling at clouds.

Again what I really love is that you might easily call bullshit on a lot of these claims but the claims are exciting and enjoyable, whether or not they're "true". Simon's remark about this being a "Fever dream" of a book is OTM.
I was reading Mark and Nomad's posts in the Baudrillard thread last night and something similar came up re: some Dawkins review of Sokal's book rubbishing Deleuze, Baudrillard and others for using scientific language in a way he didn't approve of.
