it's like gymnastics, isn't it? You can see them perform tricks and move their bodies in exciting ways but it's ultimately just movement for the sake of movement. No purpose, no substance, just training for the sake of being trained.

I hear this in Adele though. You're not from London so you don't have the same background in 80s boogie, rnb and shit. It's arguable that 80s rnb is even popular than 90s rnb specifically in London. I'm not talking amongst the youth but the city as a whole. That stuff is still played on Sunday pirate radio. Loose Ends, D-Train, Kleeer, the lot.

Nah it's all forced. she should sound more London.

This is why Jessie J was far superior to Adele. But people never understood this.

Jessie doesn't pretend to hide her lack of vocal training in pseudo-rnb affectations she just resorts to the classic british diva malisma. We only do things good when we get them wrong. Dance music, rap filtered through fast chat, and so on.

As is obvious I do not subscribe to mark's valuation of music. This is why he was able to dismiss practically all hip hop made after 1989, from undie to street rap. Practically all of it.

Mark didn't dislike 90s Kool Keith because he was nerdy, but because it offended his valuation of black people as as an (insipiently at all times) radically revolutionary subject.

The mistake in approaching this stuff is to think that all popular London music is popular chart music.

Dido was not seen as relevant in ldn, whereas you could not escape Sizzla - Volcano at one point. Inescapable. Always blasting out of cars at every time. with shola ama - imagine club asylum remix, amira my desire etc.

post-punk was mostly over for city kids when electro came around late 82 into 83. Really that is the continuum for us in the UK.

This is perfect london. a bit plastic, not a controlled voice, but quite exagerrated and ultimately violently ecstatic for that reason.

I think the first two Dido albums are great because they disguise really bleak, alienated sentiments in the language of post-club pop techniques, she might sound posh and plain but lyrically there's some really direct and heavy stuff about modern life that makes more sense to me the older I get

I mean I find Adele and Dido guilty of the same sin. exagerratedly rehearsed performance. Not enough spontaneous alchemy. What you criticised what's their face up thread for.

Like, the problem with Adele is not that she's soulless (in the rnb sense) but precisely that she's too soulful. Far too soulful and rote. I'm saying its not cheap music. If it was cheap music it would be redeemable.

Conversely happy hardcore is relatively soulless in the rnb sense, but if we want to talk about evoking emotions of the human experience it has more genuine and accidental intent in it.

Beverly Knight and Tom Jones. That's them. As bad as they are, I find Adele even worse. She takes their rehearsal to another level of unoriginal studiousness.
