I didn't hear any of that clapping tonight do they only do that once a week?
They do it every night in Lisbon I'm told... don't do it all here though. In fact in general I've been hugely disappointed by the lack of people here coming out on their balcony and singing, doing dj sets or anything interesting or in fact showing any form of solidarity or friendship whatsoever.

It's funny that you say that cos I now realise that I have not seen one single person anywhere worry about that aspect of it.

I just saw an article in the Guardian "How will the UK function with a sick prime minster?" and assumed they were taking the piss

He's properly panicking I guess. US has just gone over 100,000 cases.
tbh I thought it would take him longer to crack, if anything. the first day of 500+ deaths.

invoking the Defense Production Act to get ventilators produced is good.

like everything Trump, I don't remotely believe his claims for how many ventilators will actually be produced, but it's better than nothing.

also, at least he's finally starting to become more realistic about how long a lockdown will have to be.

it's Trump. the best you can hope for is that he's less of a totally counterproductive disaster.

of course you can't get anything good from him without a ton of nonsense, but that's no surprise

gaslighting the nation at outrageous levels about how he was the first person to take it seriously, feuding with state governors, etc

it could, somehow, be worse. Bolsonaro is still at the stage of saying the case numbers are inflected and shit like "people will die, that's life".

also Rich, buddy, you gotta do me a favor and stop coming here every day and saying omg wow the U.S. numbers look terrible

they're going to look terrible for the foreseeable future. the time to avoid that has passed.

the number of new cases today was actually just slightly less than yesterday.

I don't think that means much, but put in perspective. we have to adjust to new realities. deal with things as they are.

get ready for 1000+ deaths/day in the U.S., and more. for Italy-style or worse numbers in the UK.

this is probably about to truly explode in Turkey. probably Brazil in the near-future. maybe Ecuador, Chile, South Africa.

I'd expect 1m+ global official cases by late next week if not sooner.

I get the difference between intellectually knowing a fact and gut-level feeling its impact, but we can't keep doing it again and again

to my understanding, if the death toll here in the next few months is only, say, 100,000 that would be a fantastic outcome

this is the reality we now live in. there's no use in continuously being shocked by that.

I would agree that in all likelihood UK figures will end up worse than Italy - the response has been even more arrogant and is likely to unfold in several places at once. UK and US are both in terrifying positions right now. Birmingham Airport is being turned into a fucking mortuary, we are beyond anything imagined here

There was a behind enemy lines type operation here to get a mate out of istanbul this week. 3 flights cancelled. Managed to get one of the last flights to Gatwick. He had to leave everything behind and flee.

I'm just amazed that nobody in power seems to be taking it seriously at each escalation. Each viscerally shocking number feels it ought to be the one that penetrates... but it never does

Planes... I don't understand how they are still flying. We are under the flight path here and some are still going over... every time I wonder who is on it.

I wonder if Trump could ever go far enough that someone around him just shoots him in the back of the head or something.
