Astroworld horror

horrible, horrible... heads must roll for this....

but one thing I can't my head around - in my mind I think of Travis Scott's music as "file under ambient" - dreamy, wispy, electronic vapors.... "Goosebumps", "Sweet Sweet" etc

The tunes don't seem designed for slam dancing and people going berserk

When did his whole thing become about getting the audience to rage?

I thought this thread was gonna be about how horrible his Astroworld album was (and it really is horrible, unlistenable to me) didn't even know about the recent tragedy.

From my perspective all of these big American festivals look apocalyptic and violent - echoes of Woodstock '99, and going back a lot further, Altamont?

A bunch of people have been trying to mythologise the whole thing and claim it was a demonic ritual involving human sacrifice, but it just comes off as an embarrassing attempt to heighten the drama and make their lives a bit more exciting.

There was some bullshit going round about people in the crowd being injected with something too, including a security guard, but it's apparently been dismissed and the security guy said he was just punched.

Doesn't seem like there's much connection between Scott's music itself and what happened at the festival.

Could it be more to do with a post-Covid lockdown blowout? a release of pent-up frustration or something like that?

Maybe the music comes across differently in a live setting. It isn't the first time he's been partially blamed for someone getting injured at one of his concerts;

I suppose the problem with TS has always been excess (musically and also the whole Astroworld concept that's lead to this disaster). When he tones it down and/or collaborates with other people he's often great - The Huncho Jack album with Quavo, the Don Toliver collabs, other odds and ends.

Love this new single with Donny.

I assume this is what Simon is referring to:

A master of marketing who is equally skilled at curating big-name collaborators and exclusive experiences, Mr. Scott is a figure of few words and little eye contact who isn’t known as a technically adept rapper or a dynamic offstage celebrity. Instead, he has built his multiplatinum, widely licensed name as an avatar of excess and a conductor of energy — an electric live performer who prioritizes how his music makes you feel (and act).

Since 2015, when he established himself as a reliable concert headliner, Mr. Scott (born Jacques B. Webster) has gained an international reputation as a star attraction and an evangelist for good-natured physical expression — what he calls “raging” — whipping up mosh pits, crowd-surfers and stage-divers as his shows teeter on the edge of mayhem. In a rare trajectory, the smash hits came only later.
