Again, it’s ok, some of my oldest mates go the full bic these days and encourage it in others too. “It’s a cleansing experience“ they say. I remember the first cleaving of locks after lockdown and going from pirate to no3 was indeed liberating

well, the fact that it seems so hard to figure out is weird in itself. after the SARS and MERS outbreaks the origin was quickly clear. whereas now we're still arguing about it after 2.5 years. presumably if the data china has proved a "zoonotic" origin they would release it. however they havent, which probably means that it doesnt.

China deserves huge opprobrium whatever the origin of the leak, in my view. Either it came from a lab with inadequate security measures, or from a revolting, unsanitary wet market selling exotic wild animals, which is supposed to be illegal but is widely tolerated (or was, until 2020). Then they compounded the harm of the initial outbreak by trying to hush it up, which denied the outside world several crucial weeks in which to prepare for the arrival of the virus.

One of my mates has been over there since before the pandemic and recently got caught up in some quarantine thing trying to come back from a holiday.

A bunch of them were forced into hotels, only allowed out something like once a week, forced to take tests. He posted a few pics on Facebook of them all being made to line up by police or whoever and said people started kicking off over it.

I think he's back wherever he's currently living in China now, but sounded a very unpleasant experience.
