If you’re ‘lucky’ you get talent spotted in some useful form of intervention as a youngster. Tons of types. Even with the rarest of teachers, there’s always one you remember with genuine respect and admiration, yet one of the worst addicts I knew was a lad who got cherry-picked for a scholarship at a leading public school

Absolute fish out of water, clearly hated it. He got nuked on two fronts too, did maths like Russell Crowe in A Beautiful Mind and played football and cricket at near county-level. Dapper. Had an Oxbridge offer, nailed his A-levels but somewhere in his school life everything started to slide. Whatever “it” was, he never spoke about worries or concerns but when you know someone for long enough you see their slide differently, especially with hindsight

He was out caning it early rave years and as soon as skag turned up was all over it, died aged 25 from an accidental o.d

I used to try applying the Burroughs line to my friend’s life about there being no coincidences, no accidents, that nothing happens unless someone wills it to happen. Never quite got it over the line though

Tall poppy syndrome, unfortunately he fell in with degenerates who wanted to drag him down. Many such cases.

accidental lives exist beyond career arcs, London used to be semi-affordable and the range of youth development schemes available means young people have no real agency to roam today, even for a few years of wanderlust which the middle classes achieve/attain via their college years

accidental careers are more “never planned it such a way, sort of fell into it”, which is why you’re better off exploring life to its fullest, learning from multiple directions, accidents of fate and actual accidents too

what good is a story without a significant plot shift - life can be acutely grey, particularly in Britain, without a twist here n there eg where or who would you be without a few years in the trenches of early acid house
