Mass shootings

These two in California being done by old Asian men feels strange.

The two latest shootings were also notable for the age of the suspects, one in his late 60s, another in his early 70s.

A database of 185 mass shootings between 1966 and 2022 maintained by the nonprofit Violence Project includes just one carried out by someone 70 or older - a retired miner who killed five people in Kentucky in 1981.

Shit, I hadn't heard there'd been another one. Makes a change from 20-year-old white guys, at least.

if I was a conspiracy person, I'd wonder at the perfect timing - trans person commits mass shooting at a Christian private school in a state at the forefront of anti-trans legislation - and think about yunno the Reichstag fire. but this is also just America where it's not even April yet and we've already had 126 mass shootings and basically anyone with an axe to grind and/or mental health issues can get guns and go on a shooting spree, so it could very well just be something like that.

There are several potential explanations for any given shooting, but the 2015 Texas case mentioned here's absolutely nuts.

... the official story from government prosecutors is that the FBI agent simply had no idea that he was in the car behind two would-be mass shooters who the FBI was closely surveilling and who the agent had corresponded with a week beforehand. He didn’t even know they were in Texas! It was just an unfortunate coincidence that he was following them taking pictures of the man they were about to shoot.

I know people are down on Substack and like to dismiss anything on there out of hand, but it's just a platform and the article's well sourced with a bunch of archived links to CNN, CBS, NYT, etc.

I'm sure you've seen that thing in the news lately where a teacher was forced out of his or her job after deliberately and without warning subjecting students to some horrendously shocking hardcore pornography that will no doubt leave every single one of them scared for life.

For those who missed it, the sick pervert apparently showed them a picture of a penis. And, if they had turned the picture upside down then the penis would have been pointing upwards as though it were erect. So for all we know, some of the kids may have seen what appeared to be a threatening and aggressive organ in a state of arousal.

To fill in the rest of the details, the offending organ was attached to a statue of this bloke called David made my some old pervert who was Greek or something... to be honest that bit's not important; it was a dick, she got fired, good riddance, the end.

And the below cartoon from Australia writes itself really doesn't it.

I know they are getting very common but no mention here of the mass shooting yesterday or the mass shooting today?

It feels to me that situation of weary acceptance where killings in single figures barely merit a mention is indicative of the fact that the NRA has won and noone is gonna take any steps to stop them happening, we've moved into a world where they are gonna be treated as inevitable natural phenomena such as hurricanes or earthquakes and the question will simply be how best to mitigate their effects and clear up afterwards.

A very bleak and depressing state of affairs. One of the most vivid illustrations of the disconnect between the laws people want and the laws that actually get passed.

They're at the stage of car bombs and mosque attacks in the Middle East now.

A sentence that is doubly sad given the acceptance it already implies.

Well, I don't know that people in the Middle East accept them. I'm just talking about the response when people over here or in the States hear about them.

the one with the laid off banker? read something about him being popular in high school, old friends and acquaintances baffled that he would become a mass shooter.

there's no reasion why it should be more tragic because it's a normie but there is something chilling about the implications isn't there? a sense of precarity
