the visual space at eye level gives the impression that a city is made of signs and symbols words and images. lifting your eyes up and out of that band corrects that impression.

Don't do this. It's a trap. The podcast is evil.And @yyaldrin if you want to feel at least somewhat productive, just mute the game and listen to a lecture instead. Or a podcast. Any topic/field of interest, seeing as almost any topic/field has lectures on youtube for free. Learn by osmosis. I switch between actively listening to lectures, actually trying to grasp the topic at hand and keep the thread, and then passively listening while playing some game.
