How does sense of humour work in music then?
generally it's not a good thing - there are no straight up joke songs that should be taken seriously, by definition.
but i think its importance is often unrecognised and maybe hard to acknowledge, A lot of the contrasts that make up the beauty in nuumic music use it, perhaps obliquely - those exquisite moments in jungle are when you move away from the machine/body music and it becomes humanised with like a cartoon voice, speeded up snippet of lyric or film vocal caricaturing gangsterism, arch and somewhat arbitrarily bringing character to the tune
that raver's broad ecstasy grin when the tune brings in the ironic italianate piano, or the filched soul lyric
even to the point of stereotyping, snatched rastafarian samples adding levity to white electronic music,
of course there's a lot of obvious and intended good humour in grime, hiphop, reggae, where else...?
