Last EP is quite good, 30 min mix from him to start proceedings, final tune of which is an avalanche death remix of skeptas shut down which I really enjoyed when it cam on in the mix but when I listened again I did just think: original is better

there’s a line of thought i’m particular towards that says the japanification of american culture is a second mover to the japanification of the american economy—stagnant wages, growing cost of living, all routes to prosperity sufficiently remote that most youth are basically forced into marginality. the casualization of sex work happened in the 90s there, alongside the asian financial crisis and the associated stagflation. It was treated as a cultural trend there too, which is an obvious frame to choose if you don’t want to talk about being hard up for cash.

It's interesting if you go back to stuff like Die Hard and American Psycho and pay attention to how Japan's discussed -- I think at one point a character in the latter claims the Japanese will own everything by the end of the 90s. I wonder whether that future failing to materialise is partly why Americans are now so enamored with Japanese culture. They're no longer a threat.

Japan was certainly a bogeyman here back in the 80s/90s. they were kicking our ass with imports, all the best technology was Japanese (Sony! Panasonic!), even had pretty good baseball teams. then the bubble economy happened, declining birthrates, rise of competing asian countries with lower wages.

The nordic countries are stagnant, but probably less stagnant than anywhere else. Is anime popular in southern europe?

Osama Bin Laden was found with an enormous amount of hentai, anime, and classic videogames, including pirated Animal Crossing roms, Devil May Cry, and even multiple direct-to-DVD Final Fantasy movies. We're talking about a global vanguard of disenchantment. Is it any surprise that the theatre of Bin Laden resembles nothing so purely as that of an anime villain? Like any anime fan who starts to draw—he went from image consumer to image producer.

Apparently American street racing/tuner culture was fueled by cheap Japanese imports. That's why all the cars in Need for Speed Underground and The Fast and the Furious were Nissan, Toyota, Mitsubishi etc.

American labor politics destroyed the auto industry, the entire business turned into being about arbitraging union rules rather than actually making vehicles. This is why Tesla was able to come up so fast—the big automakers outsourced all their parts production to less unionized businesses around them, because employing union workers for final assembly was too expensive. This meant Tesla was able to show up and just buy all the R&D the big 3 had put in off the shelf—and now that they're reaching scale, they're able to pull it back in-house, and achieve even better economies than the big automakers can.
