Not read but there are stacks of overlaps with child development here. Eg: an infant in the age group 2-4 who faces overtly problematic challenges during that period is far more likely to develop anti-social personality disorder. From there it isn’t too far a stretch to end up coercively controlling, pimping and more hardcore criminality.

Will grip a copy, @Woebot ta for the heads up.

you won't regret it. and it's definitely worth reading the book rather than any kind of summary. the second half on character is where he really goes for the throat. but in such a way that we can all recognise our foibles.

That every interaction is a story of dominance and submission and the further down the pecking order we are the more sickly the more sad the more dying.

Yeah and maybe also that it's bundled up with stuff like social belonging, that there are many pecking orders, etc. Think about the kind of dad who isn't respected at work, comes home and demands it from his family (often aggressively).

The sexual realm is where this kinda stuff becomes especially prominent, which is why a global dating market has exacerbated a lot of these fears/insecurities. It's also why "status" stuff will stick around long after we implement progressive visions of economic security for all, which, while a noble goal, will not actually have the psychological security effect I think a lot of its advocates believe it will

You can even drop all these silly words like status and dominance and just say that people are kinda confused about what they want and desire, but they definitely desire what other people desire, and this asymmetric structure of group desire—of asymmetric admiration, watching—creates an objective landscape of one's communal standing.

is not like other people
Because of his isolation, the creep has a qualitatively higher sense of identity. He has a sense of the boundaries of his personality, and a control of what goes on within those boundaries. In contrast, the mature adult, who spends all his time with his marriage partner or in groups of people, is a mere channel into which thoughts flow from outside; he lives in a state of conformist anonymity ... He retains the child's capacity for make believe. He retains the child's lyrical creativity in regard to self-originated, self justifying activities. There is enormous room in the creep's life for the development of every aspect of the inner world or the inner life. The creep can devote himself to thought, fantasy, imagination, imaging, variegated mental states, dreams, internal emotions and feelings towards inanimate objects. The creep develops his inner world on his own power. His inner life originates with himself, and is controlled and intellectually consequential.
