Because its not cool to start your own thread about you, so you do it for others, and hope someone reciprocates, perhaps.

it started in the music subforum with people basically trying to make people post lists of tunes and became some quickly accepted honourable practice after that. it's a more peer-pressuring version of posting "please x make a thread about y". not been used to bully so far

Some of them are just wind ups tbh. You make one about something you know the person isn't into, e.g. Craner Inna Jamaica, Play Craner New Rap Music, Luka's Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame etc.
