I think for transcendental hatred to occur there needs to be more than for it to just be a really really bad song. Something extraneous has to give it that further shove to lift it from just music to a truly hated life experience. And yeah, the most common way for that to happen is for it to have been forced on you again and again - and when that happens it's normally cos you're in a menial or at least lowly job in which someone else selects the music, someone in HR or middle management probably unthinkingly sets the dial almost randomly to what happens to be the shittiest station, not even dreaming of the sheer misery that that casual flick of the wrist will inflict on possibly hundreds of his underlings. The Christmas topic brings up the fact (no doubt alluded to throughout this thread) that to really hate a song its almost essential that you're forcibly exposed to it over a somewhat prolonged period.
So that's the classic triple-whammy; a shit song that you hate, which takes you back to a shit job that you hated where it was inflicted on you so repeatedly it reached torture levels.
But there must be other situations... the song that was on the radio when you're girlfriend dumped you or whatever, things that you associate with bad news or simply a bad period. Any suggestions for songs that take you instantly back to a place you never wanted to go to?
