the house Renaissance

It’s tinsel for pissed up in Derby town centre on pub dust and 15 pints have a row go to shake hands but head butt the cunt instead sound of breaking glass surrounded by the filth escape and grip a kebab before cctv ops pull your mug and the filth arrive again all night in the cells for pissing through a shop letterbox

in a way I want to heretically suggest, ribbing on @blissblogger , that beyonce is ironically too secular (well, materialistic) for house music.

This contradiction between the gospel and machine, this flanging aspect is the most significant element. There is always this dialectical war between god and the demiurge. This is what makes house appealing to even people like me who find clubbing (say, chartpop clubs as spaces) utterly intolerable. large gatherings of people tightly packed like sardines on MDMA and booze? Count me out, please.

someone screaming they’ll be dead in a ditch as a lowered Ford Fiesta jockeys past pumping it out kids inside all gakked up

it’s not lost in sound, it’s just lost

What do you mean by ‘this flanging aspect’?hatever

texture as rhythm? whip, warp, other non W words

punch, thump, separation of top mids and bottoms

these tracks are very bright, in the way whatever clothes shops that still exist play everything too loud

An interesting thing about Beyonce I picked up reading one of these impossibly dreary and virtuous pieces on this new record - and it's something I sort of knew just through noticing that you never heard her songs on the radio, like, maybe once in a blue moon you'll hear something, but generally she's not played on the commercial rap / R&B stations here - but she continues to be the biggest thing in pop (so it's said) but she has not had a number one single in about a dozen years. I forget the exact number but it's a really really long time, and it's very striking because before that, from Destiny's child through to i don't know which song, virtually ever Beyonce-connected song was a number one. So she's remained this enormous Pop Figure, based on something other than radio plays or track sales or singles chart positions. A free-floating eminence has been achieved, based on things like the Serious Statements, doing that video album, and the sheer critical acreage of coverage those gleaned, and then stuff like the Superbowl performance.
That's indeed wild. A quick scan of Spotify plays shows her 2000s and early 2010s albums would regularly put out a single with 1B+ plays, and then several more with half a bil each. Lemonade peaks at a quarter bil, and her albums since then, significantly less.

Do you reckon her lean toward critical acceptability has come at the cost of proper mass appeal? Or that she & her team saw the writing on the wall, an inevitable expiration date for all pop stars, & decided to pivot? Or just chance, no meaningful connection between them?

yeah, there's no possession by the machine.

Now you can say that idea is old hat by now, but in which case why make music with electronic instruments? it's like tapping a guitar. it might be fun in a free improv context, but you have a drum for that. Why use alien, inhuman, interstellar electronics to approximate proper musicianship?

now you can be like but thirdform, you like Weldon Irvine, Roy Ayers and all that space funk! Granted, I'll concede I'm not meant to be ideologically consistent on this. But I would argue with that kind of music that the synthesisers were integrated into the music to create what at the time was a futurist imaginary. That was futuristic for then and hearing synth sounds on records accentuated their alienness. But today to make entire smoothed out pop songs out of synthesisers just seems to be redundant, unless it is a form like hip hop and rnb, which is constantly deconstructing and reconstructing itself, where the technology and the methods of delivery are in a kind of symbiosis.

Some of the beats on this are fire. All up in your mind (the best proper song here maybe) and energy are top notch. Shame so much of it sounds so casually constructed. She can also be a truly terrible lyric writer for such a key figure in modern pop. but then i guess that is just this era.

like part of what is so fascinating about barty is he has no cultural context for real music separated from electronic music. in that even though we're around the same age, our different upbringings, his progressive, cosmopolitan, liberal, mine dislocated, doubly alienated, immigrant, conservative means I have references for two generations back that he simply won't have access to. Nothing to do with race really, I can speak to Irish or Polish guys and they can get it as well. for him pharoah sanders and jungle partake in the same linguistic continuum, whereas for me such an idea is absurd.

disagree a bit (not for the sake of it) about beats

the US has produced insane beatsmiths, you may not take to all of it but there are folks like thatmanmonkz For Bae, coincidence?, who rock your attention

Maurice Fulton going all out

Maurice Fulton and any real vocal talent is a solid match, endless magic

Yeah. I skimmed through the other night when drunk and stoned and really enjoyed it from a production point of view. Very raw when you let your guard down. But it is what it is, people who don't really know too much about house putting their own spin on it

But anyway, the real answer to the issue here is what I wrote here:

It's all so clear to me now

Beyonce needs to do an album with Omar S

Guaranteed game changing smash

#back2theraw

That would truly achieve what was attempted with Rennaissance and would be proper. His vibe plus her vocal style would work imo
