Words and phrases to cancel

This guy is good on accentism. I’m trying to find a thread with a really good defense of Londoners use of ‘arks’ instead of ‘ask’ with loads of good examples of non-phonetic middle class English

It’s very wrong, a truncated drone of ignorance

If Limmy agrees it’s time to walk away from the debate Tea
Obviously chanting "Ing-ger-lund" makes you sound like a moron. I was just seeing if I could coax another chainsaw gif out of you.

'Axe' for 'ask' is pretty interesting, since lots of English words have undergone metathesis, whereby sounds get switched around, and this is (or was) particularly common in West Country dialects. This is where lots of the plantation managers who oversaw slaves in the West Indies came from, so it entered Jamaican, Barbadian (etc.) English via that route, was brought back to the UK by immigrants from those countries, and from there entered general 21st century London English.

Another one is 'waps' for 'wasp', which also sounds like something a stereotypical bumpkin would say, but both forms were widely used in Old English.

'Supposably' actually makes sense, on the same pattern as 'arguably' or 'debatably'. OTOH, 'would of' makes no sense at all, and is just wrong and ugly.

Supposebly is great. Sounds as though it should be a word, reminds me a little if my friend's phrase for wasting time watching porn - procrasturbating. Not so much in meaning or the way it was constructed, but in the satisfying shape of the word.

That was Al, wasn't it? Fantastic word.

Lots of axe/ask here as well. and I think I've even said supposebly on occasion.

that tweet reminds me of one that's not reached cancel level but trending towards annoying: "in the wild". as opposed to what, the twitterverse?

Record collector/digger types would often refer to rarities bagged in the wild as opposed to cheating by buying them on ebay...

ended up in a kind of fake chinese tea shop thing today (this is the kind of thing you only end up doing when you're off the booze and basically just want a place to sit, i've been to cava bars, sober bars, a cat cafe, a board games cafe recently all for the same reason, anyway it was comfortable enough and a $10 bill for two people is good going).

there was a girl in there going on and on about feminism in a way that sounded very twitter-based, she must have been about 20, you can fill in the blanks and i realized that i probably sounded a lot like her when i used to talk about anti-capitalism when i was that age, a really inchoate and inconsistant set of beliefs that you're half saying because they make sense to you and half because they sound cool, a kind of cut-up of other texts you've read and that you're repeating mixed in with some original thoughts from your own head. for me it would have been reeling off things that i'd vaguely understood from no logo. you can't really get too annoyed about that kind of thing i think, it's people learning how to talk and how to think, how to grapple with these complicated things

i suppose part of the difference though is that by virtue of the online space 20 year olds do actually weild a bit of power now

Cava is a kind of wine, though, isn't it? Or does it have an additional meaning I'm not aware of?

Tonight... I've dug deep for mindtwisting rarities to open your third eye & lead you through the doors of perception, across the black seas of infinity to the hill of dreams... if you leave now you have time to get there, so see you later!

this is almost out of date to be cancelled now, i feel like its usage crashed with the crypto bubble bursting, but i really hated "gm" as soon as i saw it.

it was the essential utterance of the crypto-evangelist/brainwashed, shorthand for "good morning". what i thought was interesting is that it seems fairly harmless - how can you get annoyed at upbeat people saying good morning to each other on discord or twitter everyday? doesn't this seem like a nice community? but it's actually the social equivalent to the buy-in for the pump and dump scheme. keep up the relentless facade of optimism about the utilities of the pyramid scheme product so that you can keep pulling people onto the lower rungs.

there are whole channels in some of the crypto project discord servers that i'm still in that are dedicated to people saying gm to each other. you even get a bot recording your gms and giving you points for gm-streaks.

wagmi - we're all gna make it - that was another one. i think people call it toxic positivity

Put that way, it sounds like a cross between a generic get-rich-quick scheme and a vaguely cult-like self-improvement programme.
