Thought I'd branch out into some soul. I know this will be known to a bunch of you. I'm including as I remember it being an LWR powerplay, LWR being the first pirate I listened. Maybe that helped break this tune in London, idk? Electro-soul realness diva action doesn't get better.

A big crossover point for me though was being from Essex, which was kinda the soul county in the 80s. Why was Essex the soul county? Ultimately I think like everything in Britain, it's a class thing. Essex is full of guys who moved out from the East End, then Dagenham, and working class communities like music they can dance to (I have a simllar theory re. Essex girl jokes). Always found it interesting that Cardiff's hooligans' called themselves the Soul Crew.
Anyway, enough blather, some tunes.

14. Zapp - Computer Love

When I was 15, this song seemed like the absolute height of sophistication. Could there be better music? No, of course not. I think my 15 yr old self was onto something. This thread is unleashing lots of random memories, girls I failed to get off with 30 years ago etc. This one brings up very specific memories of bonding with a mate of a mate, who was older than me in school, over our mutual wonder at this tune, which he had on 12".

Having said I'd avoid obvious tunes, fuck it, I absolutely love this and I don't care who knows it. Not trying to steal Craner's thunder as the board's leading fan of Luther Vandross, so I've gotta rep the great man's only contemporary rival, Alexander.

I said these tunes are bringing back weird memories, this one seems mostly associated, not with a terribly sad love affair, but with failing Physics. Me and a couple of mates basically used to sit at the back of the class singing Anita Baker tunes and breaking the equipment. We were challenged on it by the teacher once or twice but had zero motivation. I remember walking out the exam, after not being able to do any of it. I didn't care, I had Anita.

Switching tempo a bit - this is something I remember from the time, but I don't think I really understood it. It's a real on the edge of experimentation club track. But it stuck in my head for 30 years. I think there's a bunch of remixes and alternate versions but I can't be arsed with that rabbit hole.

Another early doors proto-house classic. Again, weird trying to understand and process these records in my bedroom when I'd never actually been to a club at that point. The overuse of vocal samples and scratches really serves to place it in time. I'm wondering if the bassline ripped off Wally Badarou.

The first time I heard this was Menace II Society.

Around 86/7 or so, "rare groove" began to emerge (or be rediscovered), and my tastes began to be more strongly influenced by retro. This was one of the first things I totally fell in love with.


Note: its not at all "rare groove", just an amazing piece of gospel disco that got revived

I could just list some of the more anthemic tunes that got revived back then, things like Jackson Sisters "I believe in Miracles" but tbh, "90 %of me is you" etc etc but tbh, they suffer from over saturation, we've all heard them to death. So gonna try and dig in the memory banks and pull out a few tunes that were dipping in and out of the growing record collections of me and my friends.

22. Four Below Zero - My Baby's Got ESP

Think this one was revived by the Northern crowd first, must've been that tempo is pure Northern, even the production is a bit late for their tastes. Incredible tune though.

Have to have a couple of JBs' tunes in here, as the revival of his music was such a dominant thing at the time. This was always a (lesser known perhaps) personal fave.
