funny how all these 15 year old americans know way more about cinema than grandad craner
It's because they've all grown up in front of screens rather than out building dams in streams and playing football in the street like we were.

Anyone mentioned the neon thing yet? That's become a big part of film since the 2010s. Refn, Cosmatos, Gaspar Noe, Harmony Korine, the John Wick series and probably a bunch of other stuff I'm forgetting. There's even a recent distribution company called NEON.

that comes from GTA Vice City
integral part of THE NEON DEMON by Nicholas Winding Refn, one the directors I listed as one of my TOP 5 auteurs of the 21st century ( so far )
Not that into him, but was excited at the thought of this:
On August 14, 2016, Refn announced via his Twitter page that his next project would be titled The Avenging Silence, calling it "Ian Fleming + William Burroughs + NWR = The Avenging Silence" and posted images for Fleming's novel, Dr. No and for Burroughs's novel The Soft Machine. Variety reported that producer Lene Borglum described the purported plot as following: "[A] former European spy [accepts] a mission from a Japanese businessman to take down the head of a Yakuza boss in Japan".
the Enter The Void opening credits may rate in my top 10 "opening credits" EVER list
Best bit of the film, unfortunately.
and the things which feed into vice vity. scarface and the pink and purple neon niteclub for instance. The Vice City influence looms large, at least with younger people, but you can pull on threads from all over. Some are possibly coming at it from older directors like Sirk and Anger, others from Argento. Perhaps there are people taking cues from Mann and Blade Runner and that particular flavour of neo-noir. You've got the Wim Wenders stuff with Robby Muller; Kurosawa's Kagemusha; Hong Kong; Tokyo. And enough time's passed there'll be people taking cues from Refn, Noe, etc. themselves.
