Just seen this. Sobering! Is this the best alky movie ever made? Days of Wine and Roses is shit, of course.

yeh, by the way, not only a dissensusish film, but for a dissensusish cause also:

I saw the film "Primer" recently, and I would universally recommend it... very strange and unusual tale of power and science, shot for 7,000 dollars, and definitely makes the most of it. Extremely unique and somewhat confusing structure... one for the engineers especially.
super
unreserved recommendations,
looking fwd to 2nd time round where i may actually get to understand what's going on....

Yeah it's amazing. Like you say one you can watch many times. Really strong performances and a good atmosphere throughout. Also recommend Primer.

Watched 'I Stand Alone' last night, French thriller by the same guy who did 'Irreversable', and it's no less fucked up. Tense as fuck, reminds me of Herzog in some of the ways it's done, but very original too. Builds up consistently and the main character is a nutter. Can't beleive I hadn't heard of it before. Difficult to recommend it to people though, some of the stuff is too fucked up! See it if you like bold cinema.

i am fond of LLV. saw that in a theater and a few times on the smaller screen. good stuff. what happened to nick cage? i reckon that was his last good flick.

as far as alcohol flicks go, Harvey and Barfly stand out in my mind.

I regard Gaspar Noé as the greatest filmmaker alive. What distinguishes him from other contemporary directors is his rejection to infuse his portrayal of human existence with any kind of false sentimentality or an illusive hope of redemption. His nihilism is not a gesture, but an uncompromising confrontation with the reality of life. He's a true artist.

I can't fucking wait to see his upcoming film "Enter the Void" - what a title! - supposed to be released in early 2010. It's about, uhm, the ultimate realization of life's meaninglessness in the moment of death. There will be hallucinatory sequences inspired by DMT trips and Thomas Bangalter is responsible for the soundtrack/sound effects. Here's a teaser.

i got drunk and watched Bad Lieutenant, perfect anecdote to a shit day at work. laughed my ass off, Cage is a funny guy, i read it like a comedy. surprised to find it was directed by Herzog, is he moving towards being a Hollywood director now?

I've seen it, certainly a touching, compelling and thought-provoking documentary. The parts which explore the self-consciousness of dolphins are just incredible, especially the one scene where former dolphin trainer, now activist Richard O'Barry describes how one of the "Flipper" porpoises literally commited suicide in his arms (apparently, for dolphins, every breath of air is a willful act and this particular dolphin was so stressed out that it deliberately chose to no longer draw breath). Also, what the film has to say about oceanic pollution and the alarming toxicity of fish meat is just horrifying. When, at the end, the actual footage of the slaughtering was shown, I had tears in my eyes and couldn't help but think that humanity is a fucking disgrace.
Can't see how its much different from killing pigs, they're smart animals and get slaughtered by the fucking million. Sorry if I sound cold, but this film (The Cove) just felt like do-gooder porn. Didn't rate it at all.

BTW - I totally agree re Gaspar Noe. Great director and I look forward to his next film.

Oh this is good ...

I had posted "The Cove" on this Art. Lit thread awhile ago, just to mention it.
Thought it was an unusual effort.

So ok, I read your comment now Grizzleb, I don't know you, what you do ( are you a filmmaker ? )
but if your comment is addressed to me -I never say "Dude..."

It wasn't addressed to you, I was doing an imitation of some of the people in the film, going on about 'making a connection' with the dolphins and whales and stuff.

I'm not a filmmaker (yet haha) - what gave you that idea?
