Watched Bring Me The Head of Alfredo Garcia last night. It's a great film, no doubt, but on some viewings it seems to be lacking something. The attempted rape scene is bizarre and not too far from the one in Straw Dogs.

Warren Oates' finest performance, by far.

"Come on, Al. We're going home."

Agreed...much prefer it to Two Lane Blacktop...a much overrated film....unless you're a petrol head...or mistaking it for 'existentialism'....

Watched "Blood On Satan's Claw" last night. it's really good, super creepy. the soundtrack is fucking tense too. pretty naff ending though sadly.
Someone please recommend me some more creepy 70s british countryside occult horror, love this stuff!

is it really overatted? other than Idlerich I've yet to meet anyone who likes it. difficult to say why exactly but it's currently my favourite film.

That could explain why I've got that impression...hanging 'round here too much. ;)

Otherwise, I thought it had a lot of followers, y know, just because it is the way it is rather than for any technical, artistic, literary merits.

i thought that viking film you lot were talking about sounded interesting so i looked up the trailer on youtube and found this comment

wow it goes so fast in the trailer

in the movie nothing happens after he escapes:

they walk around, and every now and then someone gets an arrow...

Then at end he randomly gets beaten to death, not resisting?

after that admirably pithy summary actually watching the film seems a bit redundant.

I have to amdit that it's difficult to find fault with that summary.

Matt is also pretty keen I'd say. It's one of those films I reckon, very hard to put your finger on why but with some people it will get under their skin and stay there whereas others will merely find it boring. I'm sure that there others with that same quality where I would find other people's infatuation equally mystifying. For me it's that film.

Quite right, Rich. Somebody out there loves 'My Fat Greek Wedding' and would rather watch it again than endure Tarkovsky, Welles or Godard...

Somebody eh? Is his name Robin by any chance? I've not had that particular pleasure but if you're tipping it I'll make an effort to check it out.
Anyways, watched The Btter Tears of Petra von Kant the other day, don't know too much about Fassbinder but this was ace. So stylish and simple - all the action takes place in one room with about five characters in total who are all female. We were lost in it from the start.

I also watched this from the same director

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0066150/

Not nearly so good but interesting none the less - a strange pseudo-historical drama where one of the characters is clad in a leather jacket and jeans and you keep seeing cars go by in the background. Some good scenes but ultimately too didactic for me in the repetive way it broke the "don't tell show" maxim.
In its themes linking freedom of religion (or religion for the people) to communism it reminded me a little of the book Q by Luther Blisset but it was a lot more heavy-handed.

Never seen the original but the remake is awful... Has Scorsese made a decent film since Goodfellas?

The Departed was pretty good. The Aviator had its moments. Gangs of New York was crap.

Casino was after Goodfellas, but I haven't seen it.

¨Trying to 'out' me, Rich? Forget it. You're wrong. I put 'Avatar' above Kane, Stalker or Le Mepris...¨
I regret not seeing Avatar in the cinema. Doubt it will have the same impact on the home screen.

Did Jonny Trunk put the album out for this? I had it at work and then it went for a walk. Annnoying!

I really enjoyed the Cape Fear remake. Only for Robert Deniro really. I enjoy his psycho work.

I watched Fish Tank the other day, i really enjoyed that to. it is quite slow but just reminded me of being young.

My life wasn't THAT grim but can relate to parts of it.

I certainly don't regret missing it - wouldn't touch it with a barge full of Polish films - ha-ha...

On Scorsese, had similar thoughts as to his demise myself, although The Departed is good, and so is Casino, but other than that...mind you, 'Boardwalk Empire' is supposed to be great...

Not to get too mainstream on this thread, but The Social Network is brilliant. So many great characters, great script, the score's pretty lovely in parts. Best film I've seen in a while.

yeah, the remake is absolutely awful, except for juliette lewis, for whom i have an unreasonable attraction and who i cannot judge without a serious halo effect

casino was all right if not altogether too long
it maybe tries too hard
but sharon stone's performance is intense
and seeing old Las Vegas before the disneyfication is worth the price of admission

maybe you have to be american to make this sort of judgment but DeNiro with a Cajun accent is absurd. it is completely distracting, unconvincing. maybe his worst performance.

boardwalk empire is pretty good for a tv show. as with Casino, it is worth it just to see Atlantic City in its infancy. i don't have much patience for gangster cliches, and Scorcese subscribes to all of them, but hey, not a bad watch on the couch with your pals. WORST OPENING MUSIC EVER. why they couldn't use some ragtime or someshit is beyond me.

To whoever asked - yeah Johnny Trunk put the Blood On Satan's Claw out a couple of years back.

yeah The Departed was lame

back to Boardwalk Empire, the cast is amazing, the crazy skinhead dude from This Is England plays Al Capone, the jailbait chick from Trainspotting is Nucky's gf, and Nucky's dead wife is the widow Garret from Deadwood, not to mention, like, the higher profile actors on that show
