I subscribed to BFI player this weekend and ended up watching quite a few films:
- Cleo from 5 to 7: really good, strongly evocative of the hustlebustle energy of a city, made me want to check out Paris, the rhythm of life heightened and bottled 9/10
- Pickpocket: struggled to connect with this emotionally, apparently that's deliberate with bresson, but it was brilliantly shot etc., elegant pickpocketing techniques 8/10
- The Great Ecstacy of the Woodcarver Steiner: herzog doc on a ski-'flier' who keeps being pushed to break records by publicity hungry event judges, keeps flying further than the finish line and almost dying, popol vuh soundtrack, definitely worth a watch at 45 minutes 8/10
- The Passion of Joan of Arc: see above 10/10
And on iPlayer:
- Manhunter: brilliant brilliant, dodgy soundtrack only makes it more sinister, best bit: the tooth fairy watching his home video voyuer porn on a projector with an oblivious blind woman drinking g&t next to him, also when he takes her to see a tiger and she's clearly getting turned on by it's heartbeat or something and he's in the corner practically cumming in his pants, 10/10
