Got a d/l of the new El-P CD, "I'll Sleep When You're Dead' today. It's prog-hop! I don't think I like it. The production is amazing, but one always says that when stuck for something else to say. It sounds like he's been in the studio too long.

First generation I'd say no -especially the women - but by the time their kids are at school, the kids are going with their mums to the doctors to translate etc. I think over here the racism is more covert, but generally I think London is pretty mind-blowing culturally, mix-wise. I think generally race is less and less an issue, religion and culture maybe more so. It's hard to generalise though, but I was *not* picked on by a gang of twenty Somalian kids last week cos they had an argument over whether I was mixed-race or not lol. Just as well cos I was carrying two grands worth of equipment on my back...

is a PDF of the Western Bigotry Index, which makes for quite interesting, if long, reading.

Huh, those were interesting numbers. I'm not surprised to see that most Americans would *say* they're not racism/sexist/homophobic... What they'd say compared to bigots and what kind of policy they'd vote for are two different things...

i dont like it that much anymore, dont like the proggishness either. but it is still hardcore and very uncompromising compared to a lot of stuff in the underground which i like.

I don't know how you assess how many languages are spoken in immigrant-rich cities like london and NYC, but I'd have to throw the t-dot (i.e. toronto) into the mix too. I have no idea how many languages are spoken here, but my god it'd have to be a lot. As for neighbourhoods where ppl don't speak english, a bit harder to find since usually different ethnic groups are kind of jammed up on top of each other here, but I'm sure there'd be pockets in the chinatowns, etc.

We also have much less racial/ethnic tension and crime!!! :)

To tie this back to hip hop, most of our hip hop has a pretty Caribbean flavour b/c of the very big caribbean population here. The best example is, of course, Kardinal Offishall.

Look at that beautiful mug (ok, it's old, but still):

That's not much different from my blog that ran on AllHipHop.com for 24 straight days from December to January:

Hip Hop Ain’t Dead..Yet AKA Y'all Know I Got The Cal On Me! An essay about why Hip Hop will NEVER die...but why we may be giving it hypertension and adult onset diabetes. Dart's final blog in his AllHipHop.com series was on the front page of the Ill Community for 3 straight weeks.

That new El-P album is CRAZY! One.

This Is It
fighting the urge to boot el's new one....i cant wait too hear it though.

im going to buy a copy or two.

i know Fan Dam was a big flop, but looking back on it...man that was a real post 911 response through and through. Thoroughly urbanite, jagged, hyper-paranoid, getting-off-alot-of-shit-at-once brutalist poetics and ultimately completely unlistenable in a popist rap sense. El's always been on the apocalypse kick, and that was his triple seven steam right there.

i defintely expect more hate than love for the new album, but i'm open to surprises.

Hold on...where and when was Fantastic Damage a "big flop"? Commercially? (Because it wasn't) Artistically? (Uh uh) Sonically? (I think the sales and popularity of Fan Dam Plus make that a big ass NO as well) Critically? (It was hailed as a hip hop masterpiece by most reputable hip hop/urban music publications) Or did YOU not like it because I'm lost...how did the Revenge Of The Robots Tour materialize and end up so big if this album was a "big flop" like you said? Def Jux wouldn't have made it to be so big today if Fan Dam was a flop...I'm confused now. One.

I have no idea if FD was a flop or not but I can honestly say that I couldnt stand it. I found it too dense in a bad way: overmelodic and fussy. Somehow I didnt think ElP was playing to his strengths .. (?well I dont know if thats really true or not) Much preferred his earlier work. Hopefully the new one will be better.

fandam is amazing - the best thing el-ps done IMO... the new album is pretty amazing too, its sort of right along the same lines, just a bit more proggy/melodic in places/musical even.

Noooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!

Timbaland was upset about something Scott Storch said about him (Storch) being the king of the beats now (he isn't...he ain't even fuckin' with Polow Da Don right now). Timbaland aired his disapproval over Scott's statement during MTV's My Block: Virginia special (featuring Timbaland, Pharrell, The Clipse, Trey Songz & Skillz). Scott Storch caught feelings over it and decided the rhyme alongside some no name contrived Philly rapper over the Timbaland diss track "Built Like Dat"...I wasn't impressed (though the stuff about Danjahandz producing his recent hits and his Beat Club labels failure are true...Scott ain't fuckin' with Timbo...sorry). Here's the joint:
