The crappest part of your job

Melchior

Taking History Too Far
I am currently sitting in a conference exhibition hall on the Gold Coast of Australia at an Agricultural Economics conference. It is a Sunday and this is the second day of the conference. I set up the booth yesterday between 6-8am.

My job is as a publisher of academic journals for a major international academic journal and book publisher. I love my job. Howver, from time to time it requires me to occasionally go to conferences of mind-numbing tedium and sit on a booth and try to give away journals and sell books v=for several days. These conferences are almost always in the sort of shitholes that are ok if you're on a family holiday but are utterly tedious if you like music, books, nice bars etc.

This is undoutably the shittest part of a job that over all I am very happy in.

I'm hoping that there will be some porn theatre cleaners or something else on here who will make me feel better about sitting here for the next three days. So ... what's the shittest part of your working life?

ok
i'm getting fed up becos there are a few articles i want from academic journals that are inaccessible due to the jstor/athens mafia - may i rant a moment?
it's a fucking disgrace that non-academic punters like myself can't get access to learning, & it's a total racket that 1000's of journals & institutions do this circlejerk of overcharging each other & excluding me - fack!

so

anyone wanna lend us an athens pw, just for a day or 2?? :p (i cud send you some links & yu could email pdfs othewise i spose)

A couple of my mates worked in the same porn shop and it actually did have booths with VCRs that you could rent for £10 a go. They employed a french bloke to clean them. They absolutely cleaned up financially though (pardon the pun), as all the shop staff were doing the till over - £150-£200 a day, taxfree!

The crappest part of my job is the marking. Always, the marking.

Sick Boy

All about pride and egos
I am paid to do a job that shouldn't exist where the small amount of tasks I am required to do would be underneath the intellectual ability of a precocious ape. For the other six hours of the day I have to flex the job's second skill set: looking busy. This involves looking intently at a screen that is really displaying Dissensus or some other website that the IT people have not blocked.

It's a government job. Usually this means lucrative pay, benefits, and loads of paid holiday. Not me. They hired me as a temp, pay me half as much, and are currently hiring someone internally to officially take the job I am doing full-time because it requires less red tape, despite the fact I have been doing this job without error for months.

I am currently sitting in a passive-aggressive office, complete with overhead fluorescent ceiling lighting, fifteen minutes down the road from where I have lived for the last four years. Not quite a porn theatre janitor, but I hope this helps.

Dealing with glory-seeking twats who've mistakenly been informed that working in 'the medja' is somehow glamorous. Or dealing with freelancers who've no conception of deadline.

Sufi I have access to quite a lot of Athens stuff through my university, if you PM me some links I'll see if I can get them for you. Viva knowledge liberte! Or whatever the French would say.
The shittest part of my job is getting out of bed in the morning. It does not get easier with age / sticking to a regular routine. These are lies.

"the shittest part of my job is having to do it all the fucking time"
Yeah likewise. I hate myself for wasting so much time in a fucking nine till five(thirty) - it's no way to make a living. Got to figure out a way to live and get the fuck out of here - my flatmate just got laid off and I'm jealous of him, there's something not right there. Such a great weekend and then had to crawl back to reality this morning - except it's not reality but it's so hard to keep perspective when you spend eight fucking hours five fucking days a week somewhere. Right now I just want to walk out of the office and not come back.

art director?

Nah, editorial...but you should see our art director when he's in a mood.

Congratulations, you are officially sane.
