Denim

Fashion is a big area of culture that doesn't seem to get any attention here!

So what are your tips or tales on denims and jeans?

I swear by the Nashville jean by a Japanese brand Edwin. Edwin do jeans like Evisu used to before they were adopted en masse by the Henri Loyd massive. Strong, simple, well made raw denim to take time and wear in and get a beautiful fade. Modern Japanese made but with a strong classic American slant.

There is a big thread on men's fashion somewhere on here.

Anyway I agree but I like the Evisu loose cut with the minimum amount of paintedness and absolutely raw denim.
The fact that they are popular now doesn't stop them being nice jeans.

I have four pairs of Nashvilles and they have aged beautifully. I think it is best to keep washing to a minimum.

Levis do that range of replicas - LVC (Levi Vintage Clothing) with historical replicas. I have a pair of the '33 ones which have loads of cool attention to detail. Leather patch (before it got made in card, allegedly cos the cowboys said the leather stuck to their saddles), rivets on the back pockets, red selvedge denim mmmmm.

I love all the japanese denim, Sugarcanes, Samurais, Pure Blue Japans, Eternals. All nice stuff, but am I happy?

considerin' buying a pair of them nudie ones -thoughts?

Yeah, ok. I personally don't like the somewhat OTT stitching on the back pockets. And they seem a bit 'in' at the moment which may or may not bother you. My sister swears by hers though and i have seen some blokes looking nice in theirs.

If you can have a look at the Edwins I would recommend that - they are more of a classic 50s cut that Nudies, a baggier arse for instance. What cut are you after?

50'S cut; those Edwin one's seem right
very perceptive on the Nudie as my reservations were on the grounds of "they seem a bit
fashion"

Let's Talk About Ceps
Is there anyone here who doesn't reckon those ultra-skinny emo/indie/hipster jeans look utterly shit?
Because if there is, they can get to fuck.

Same goes for those 'Yassir Arafat' headscarf/neckerchief things.

I do think there is a small percentage of people with the frames of models who can pull off the skinny jeans/ leather jacket, Hiedi Slimane Dior look yes.

But there are not many. And bare people attempt it, love handles over the side of skinnies is pure wastism!

The Shemarghs or whatever they are called look pretty terrible, especially when in neon and adorned with hearts etc.

Some of them are indeed lovely. I'm not sure as to your question though.

Well I tend to get a bit distracted with products and map out the options and dont really rest untill I have the best... although by that time ive realised the best are specialised and there are many differing options and routes, there are many best items... er yeah
Its just my strange way of criting consumerism, a better product doesnt you happier, you stay the same, but the product happens to change... maybe its changing to what some people consider better, maybe its not. The only way products can give you happiness ( excluding those questionable markets mostly available on particular websites! ) is if you project positive notions onto them.....

Sorry ignore me

Right i see. I know what you mean hen you catch yourself going 'mm that seat is nice' just cos its visvim, headporter or whatever. I mean it probably IS nice, but not 150£ nice.

I dabbled with some of the more exotic Japanese denim brands but i love the nashvilles so much i just gave up and got another pair of them!

history is made at night
Just been reading Berlin Bromley, very entertaining account by Bertie Marshall of his days in the Bromley Contingent punk brats in 1976/77. At one point he recounts the story of getting a hairdresser to dye his hair... denim.

I used to have this weird philosophy in school that you should either wear your jeans really baggy like a rapper, or really skinny like a punk. Anything in between, and that was just compromising.

Obviously I'm over that now, but I usually buy mine quite skinny now (it was baggy back in those days though!) The problem is, once they've gone through a dozen or so washes they stretch- even if they're 100% cotton- and you're back to the middle ground again. It's a real bastard.

i have recently (about 2 months ago) joined the legions of drain-pipe enthusiasts.

funny how my own aesthetic preferences have shifted in this short amount of time: my favorite jeans 3 months ago (boot-cut) i would not be caught dead in right now.

love my new pair of ankle tight, black/grey jeans. and am actively seeking another stretchy pair that is even tighter. as opposed to all the mishapen bodies with short legs and chub around the waist which look fucking atrocious in drain-pipes (midgets on stilts that took big dumps in their pants), I look positively yummy (or so the girls say) :)

jeans philosophy: find used ones that look pretty good and are cheap. whatever. not dropping $100s for a pair of jeans ... am I stupid? :)

rather put the money into shoes really.

Philosophy - find the ones that are yr model for life and then hammer them! I would spend up to £100 for a really nice pair.

Bootcut/flares are evil. The only way forward for a flattering and manly cut on a fella is straight-leg, whether that's a nice regular cut or a skinny one. And a baggyish arse is the only way to avoid aesthetic emasculation from behind!
