Thanks!

I was thinking of that famous mak and marcus set on Rinse (''it's not boring!'') but I'll take whatever you've got

Turns out I did have this (life-changingly brilliant) set after all

<iframe width="100%" height="120" src="" frameborder="0" ></iframe>

my little "funkytapes" mixcloud project coming along quite nicely, around 60 sets uploaded now but starting to run out, so if there's any old school heads lurking with functioning hard drives from that era here willing to share anything, would be appreciated.

Reading back a few pages, I agree that two of the aspects that made UK Funky so compelling was fun and sloppy/bashy/lo-fi quality. Like grime, the limitations of software, experience, professionalism (in some cases) made the genre all the more interesting. I've recently beein dipping back into making beats, but doing it on an iPad. I immediately found myself making UK Funky-influenced beats and tracks. It's the most fun, and it's doable using simple software. Sometimes limitations are a good thing :)

Back with another one

This one's back to back so no available track list. Deep / tech house..

Definately some UK house in there, so I guess this thread is still most applicable :)

lovely stuff

Bandcamp have played the pandemic so so well, hard to find an artist without one now

they've definitely done it well, although in this case I'd give Scratcha DVA the credit for a bit of arm twisting, going from twitter.

this is a really interesting report on Bandcamp that I read recently - https://components.one/posts/bandcamp-the-chaos-bazaar

makes the case in the latter half that they should really be more aggressive with their marketing and lobbying to bring people on, like they have reached the point where they have a duty to artists to spread the success of their business model more widely now. Bandcamp is still seen as this underground, anti-mainstream statement when even mainstream artists could easily make more money from it. maybe that'd make it vulnerable to some real concerted hostility from the big 3 though.

it'll be a shame if this really was the last bandcamp friday. the day itself can be a bit intense to follow, but the levels of extra music you have to go through afterwards is nuts, and it's clearly broken down some barriers to people just getting some gems out there too.

both spotify and bandcamp but especially bandcamp could do with some work on the search / indexing and navigation / browse. i suppose they think most users are following links so fair enough but feels so odd to me that there's no eg autocorrect or suggestions in the search

definitely, bandcamp is a mess. but yeah, you can't ignore how direct the transaction is from fan to producer/artist.

keep ur eyes peeled for more apple btw

These interviews are great on Funky's squandered potential

MC Verstile making me all melancholy:

It was a big scene, but it was a scene nobody really cared about. Nobody loved funky; everybody used it. Everybody just thought, let me do a bit of that with it, then fuck off.
Supa D, loved it — but he didn't love it. He was ashamed to say he liked it. It's true! Them mans called it wonky; nobody could say funky's the one and feel happy and smile about it. There was no real love in the funky scene.

Those scratcha shows are really good. I like the close analysis he's doing of the lyrics of songs. I caught the one where it was Tracy Chapmans fast car.

"OK let me get this straight, I've got a fast car, you want to come with me. But what I don't understand Tracy, is what you're bringing to the table..."

"Oh I see, you're going to get a job... OK"
