yeah you can clearly hear it faded in a couple of minutes earlier. there are some strong sonic similarities between the two tracks though which is what made me wonder at first.

Are a lot of these tunes only going to come out digitally?

I hate CD decks, maybe I should get Serato or something...

P.S. Well done Ben you're the Usain Bolt of M Nasty uploads lol

obviously house music is this huge thing, and this question is probably quite naive

i know at least in terms of european stuff vinyl is still quite dominant and freshness doesn't seem to be an issue so much, it seems more about playing long, varied but structurally coherent sets

im sure it's been talked about before but to what extent do you think the uk house scene could overlap with other more established house scenes, is that even desirable, and does format have a role to play in that? at the moment it's being distributed in the traditional way for underground uk dance music, and that familiarity must be at least something to do with people making garage/grime parallels aside from the actual sonics.. the digital distribution is quite diy at the moment too (other than juno but there's not a lot on there), it's quite hard to get with bigger sites without a distro backing you

if getting wider distribution becomes easier as boomnoise was saying upthread how might that affect things basically, how would the growth of the underground uk stuff differ from the growth of dubstep for example, considering house music is global already.

ramble.. apologies for any big generalisations

unconnected but a reason that more vinyl would be nice - screenshot of a waveform of something i bought online today. i ran it through the 'detect audibly noticeable clips' preset in soundforge, the markers show where they are. it's pretty extreme, clipping almost constantly, even in the intro. most digital stuff i've bought online looks like this too

^^^^ this has been bothering me a lot. the standard seems to be to max out the volume and kill the dynamics. my ears always ring after i've been in my headphones for a while. i've bought a couple of tracks that, if you zoom out on the waveform, look like a thick, solid bar. vinyl rips have trouble sounding loud enough next to them. makes no difference whether you buy from uk funky or someplace bigger like juno.

even if you do that you'll still be able to hear the clips, they'll just be quieter.. it also won't do anything to restore the dynamic range. it's not just limiting either, or it wouldn't clip - limiting to 0db you could compress it into a solid block and it still wouldn't clip.

limiting and compression is used in all mastering, it's all in the application

Owning the mp3 & vinyl of Gabryelle, I can say there's a clear difference between the two. Whether it's the mastering done at the pressing plant (I know Music House were always good for this vis a vis grime vinyl) or whatever, the vinyl is certainly a better final mix than the mp3.

I'm waiting to see how it goes, to be honest. If I can get away with just buying vinyl I'll do it; really not a fan of CD decks (and mine are crap) to be honest. There's just no satisfaction to it, it's almost too easy.

even if you do that you'll still be able to hear the clips, they'll just be quieter..

Even worse are the tunes that are pinged to fuck, but not 0db.. they are flattened to -6db or something stupid, which means the mp3 is srewed anyway...

it also won't do anything to restore the dynamic range. it's not just limiting either, or it wouldn't clip - limiting to 0db you could compress it into a solid block and it still wouldn't clip.

But, it will clip the Digital to Analog convertors on the CDJ. Your software won't tell you that tho. This is where it gets tricky. Differant digital meters measure differant things.

The scary thing about the pic you posted is if you did burn that 'as is' to CD & play it there's gonna be another layer of clipping generated as the D/A in the CDJ attempts to turn that mess into a continuous analog signal.

limiting and compression is used in all mastering, it's all in the application

Post production as a whole is really suffering at the moment. I don't understand why people wouldn't put as much effort / care into a digital release as a physical one. Getting mp3s to sound good is as much (maybe not) a challenge as getting a good cut, where are the professionals at! I bought wavs off juno the other day & a couple tunes have (almost) the 1st 3rd of the first beat cropped off.. FAIL!

I think House music as a whole can absorb, reconcile almost any & all permutations. Obv. there is gonna be a glass ceiling for certain kinds of productions, but some european 'deep' house DJs aren't gonna play Lil Silva, ever, no matter how good the mixdown is. At the moment tho, the tunes sound like house, but are structually more like UKG, short, wheelable, intros & relativeally shorter tunes, I swear I could sort files by size & have a pretty good split between 'normal' house & Funky, so trad. house DJs are gonna have to think differant to mix them. I see abit of interest coming from the white-b-more-ish corner & people playing tougher, rap-i-fied US house beats.

The thing is tho, I think there are enough open minded people in house to make a decent audience if the distro is in place.

are the cd-only tracks on geeneus's album worth getting? i got the vinyl.

and on an unrelated note, are the vocal samples on kode9 & LD '2bad' from kylie - 'slow'?
