'Progressive rock' is a movement that sprung from the ambitious English musicians of the psychedelic era, drawing from a wide range of influences (jazz, classical, 'world', folk and medieval) as inspiration for their boundlessly complex arrangements...Many of the classic prog 'movements' run to over 10 minutes and have enough time changes and ideas to see through 3 or 4 'conventional' songs.

By the late 70's the more successful progressive bands had hit the peak of their stadium-rock popularity, and the high standards of musicianship had made it impenetrable to many... all the while punk bubbled under the surface, culminating in the minimalist explosion of 1976 that reshaped pop culture.

The genre was initially challenging and mold-breaking, an imaginative expansion of what had come before. This compilation focuses on the early 70's 'golden' era - accessible, but ambitious. Prog sounds included are symphonic, psych, heavy and eclectic. There are also a couple of examples from Krautrock as well as two prog forerunners: 'I Want You (She's So Heavy' and 'Revolution'
