Any suggestions? The less said about Akira & Ghost in the Shell the better as I'm sure most people have seen them.
Some of my percees:
Castle of Cagliostro- a great Lupin III full length movie by Miyazaki. I just love the 70's feel to this, it's set in a small fictional European principality which wikipedia describes as ruritanian, whatever that means. Very charming movie.
Patlabor- made by the team who did Ghost in the Shell. Quite a complex story, though unlike Ghost you eventually understand it after a few watches rather than pretending to understand it. It portrays big robots in a mostly civillian fashion, no sci-fi to be had here. A slow paced movie for sure but very classy.
Robotech- I'm not the most impartial person when commenting on this, as unlike many I have had the luxury of watching 35 episodes in the space of a few weeks. It always looked too childish to me, but when I saw the 13 hour boxset it in a shop for under a tenner I decided to give it a go. First few episodes were disapointing. Animation was piss poor even for the time, and it was clearly a saturday morning kids show. However the more I watched it either a) the story & animation got better. b) I just got used to the series. Probably both, but the point is that as the show progresses it gets more and more endearing. mediocre star wars dog fights are the excuse for a much more interesting story. It basically pits humankind against a warmongering alien race. The real battle is won by introducing the philistine aliens to music & love. Over several hours of aliens defecting to the other side thanks to pop records, you cant help think that at the time of release would have had connotations of people from the Eastern Bloc defecting to the west so they could get their hands on all those shiny consumer goods. As good as robotech is though, i cant really seeing it work if you were watching it in drips and drabs.
Overrated Anime-
Wings of the Honneamise- On its initial release this was billed as a film that would break anime into the mainstream. To me it was so so. The alternative universe thing was okay but the film was just too boring.
Grey- On the front cover a reviewer is quoted, implying that this film is the ultimate piece of work that shows the futility of war. give me a fucking break, it is nowhere near as profound as it was made out to be. I have to disclose that I looked forward to seeing this for a decade, and I also dislike a lot of these stories set in an evil dystopian future police state. But in parts this develops into the silliest of sci fi
