Cannibal Ox - The Cold Vein

Never got into Aesop Rock- I dunno about looking like a girls football coach but his music seemed worthy and dull... I recall flute licks for some reason...

How do you Aesoprock to look? Are you an aspiring stylist?

i still cant really love this like i want to. well, i love the production but could never get into vast as a rapper. find him too smug/annoying. lucky for me theres an instrumental version of this.

i also have the instrumental version -- and, yes, it stands the test of five-years time

my roommate, who incidentally used to be mates with el-p, likes to rock the rap version -- but i find the rapping over-heated

Yeah, this well and truly stands the test of time. The beats are so great that it does really work as an instrumental album. I really like El-P as a producer - the Co-Flow instrumental album, 'Little Johnny From The Hospital', is amazing. I like Fantastic Damage as well, and his productions for Mr Lif, Perceptionists and others are the highlights of those albums. Shame his latest solo album is so dull.

Yes, I wondered why his newest album got such rave reviews! It struck me as very boring, I only got through it once I think.

I really like pretty much every track he's produced prior to that. But I can't find even one track on the new album that's vaguely memorable or interesting.

dug this out tonight because of this thread. have avoided it for a long time because it reminds me directly of a close friends death, but fuck me, what a record. vast aire's unstoppable. gek's far more eloquant then i, but i agree wholeheartedly with his comments. the sense of loss- or untapped potential (particularly after listening to burial all night)- is nigh on unbearable.

Everybodies talking as if Def Jux peaked with this one.

For me there are tracks off Bazooka Tooth that absolutely crush this album.

Super Fluke, the afore-mentioned We're Famous and one of the weirdest tracks on the album : The Greatest Pac-Man Victory In History.

It took me almost 3 years to get into this album, but its got some great stuff on it.

Fuck Labor Days.

Most boring shit in his catalog.

I'll try and give those a listen, although I can't really get into Aesop Rock as an mc, try as I might. What's the Lif ep called?

Emergency Rations is the name of Lif's EP I think. Not sure though, I only had I Phantom.

Speaking of which, I always liked El-P's verse on this:

This was the album that opened peoples eyes as to whether El-P was just a dude that made "weird" beats and made them think that perhaps he was a great producer after all. The release of this album and El-P's "Fantastic Damage" WAS when Def Jux peaked. After that and before that they've had great/excellent releases but everyone's eyes were opened at that moment in time.

If you personally didn't like it then it just wasn't made for you. Better than those people who praise "The Cold Vein" and really didn't "get" it or like it and merely repeat what they heard other people say about it.

One.

"....since when do indie records come in a WEA box?"
Cold Vein is still a classic, it gets repeat listens round mine and has since it came out. I was so hyped for the release of it I literally did backflips in the record store when I found it.
I always felt Vordul was criminally underrated by Can O's Fans, even if he wasn't the sharpest freestyler he still managed to drop a few nuggets... His 'Yung Havoks' LP is far more realised than Vast's 'Look Mom...' which just sounds like a vanity project to me... and smells like someone let the hype surrounding his rhyming skills inflate his head.
However, Vasts new record drops soon, I'll probably check it... I doubt it'll get the kind of replays that Cold Vein does though... Stone Cold classic.
Can Ox did do a 12 with Pete Rock producing, if memory serves... called 'Cosmos' or something similar, it was a bit waste IMHO.
Great thread.

i'm not going to post in this thread because i have nothing nice to say.

Really? I don't love it or anthing but I'd appreciate hearing what you think about it. It's been my introduction for people between alternative music and dance music so I respect it for being able to make a link without too much compromise. To me it sounds like a musical dialogue.
