Both are worthwhile. If you're getting individual tracks I'd say the keepers are "For U", "Whispers" and "Malibu". I adore "Leave With You" in the mix but as a standalone track it gets a bit repetitive. I wouldn't describe these tracks as the antithesis of "Fuller"/"Hurricane Riddim" - they're not as obviously hyperdub-friendly but you can tell it's the same aesthetic (not so much the case with some of funkystepz old skool housier tracks). One of the great aspects of funkystepz's dj sets is hearing that continuum presented as such.

Really looking forward to getting "Wind Storm" and "Mr. Bandicoot" next month, though it's possible the latter will suffer the same problem as "Leave With You".

^ Yeah, Eyes On You is on iTunes too, don't think the others are though, will check them out. Still excited/surprised by this sudden Devine release glut. :)

This is a great tune. :D I must be missing so many good tunes by not paying attention to funky.

Possibly yeah. But it would be the same for me in relation to post-dubstep or juke/footwork or r'n'b or all kinds of other things. I think this year I've just accepted that you can't keep up with absolutely everything and that following one thing in detail means following others in less detail.

Yes, they're all on itunes aswell, two of them are on Preshus' mixtape, the rest of which sounds pretty patchy as you'd expect. The mad one tunes are quite lite and throwaway things really but they're nice tunes anyway. I've got a soft spot for Preshus for that old garage tune 'Rinse out'.

I think listening to a lot of hip-hop this year has made me less receptive to purely instrumental music. Probably also not having decks to mix on. When I think about my favourite funky tunes this year, they're mostly vocal tunes and my favourite funky radio has been Petchy, partly because of his DJing of course but the MC's are such a huge part of that show too.

Mind you, listening to that Smoove Kriminal set there's loads of great instrumentals, I just generally don't sit and listen to a whole set anymore.

Interested to hear how people do actually consume this stuff. I've read so many people explain their disinterest in listening to radio sets (I'm not talking about your comment above corpsey) on the basis that they don't have the patience to sit and listen to 2 hour radio sets. To which I always think, "yeah but neither would I".

I mostly listen to this stuff while commuting and, in particular, at the gym, where it always feels like the best cardio music ever: exactly the right mix of predictability and constant mutation (whereas the more consistent beat of, say, a "proper house" mix always makes it feel like time is slowing down).

But that means abandoning my gym's soundtrack of Basshunter, David Guetta and ''My My My'' by Armand Van Helden!*

I'm going to give it a try.

* Actually they do play the odd crossover UK funky tune i.e.
[I find it hilarious at the gym when I'm on the treadmill and the rate of my footfalls locks exactly with the pace of a Basshunter song. Actually I find most things about going to the gym hilarious, which presumably means I shouldn't even be there.]

gyms are wrong. at least do something productive with all that energy. couldnt we hook up treadmills to the national grid or something? it all seems so wasteful.

just listened to the Smoove Kriminal's show from 15 November (which is wicked btw)...he played "Freestyle" by Fuzzy Logic, one of those funky tunes that really are funky :D...the world needs more FL releases!

http://vulive.co.uk/content/2010/11/19/smoove-kriminal-on-deja-vu-–-mon-15th-november-2010/

Oi oi, this show was a lot, big up Denoir for the link - I'd forgotten to listen to it at the time.
Along with Freestyle, some of the other tunes that were new to me & really jumped out at me included:
Carnao Beats - Biker Gonga
Ajay D - Straight Floor
Smoove Kriminal - Under The Influence
Murdz 86 - Mischief Mode
Bowly - Bleep
but basically the whole thing is good.
All about those 'reversed' sounding beats on Biker Gonga, jeeze.... :D

Ajay D - Straight Floor

He's a german producer I think. He gave away a really good tune called Space Tribal somewhere on the internet a while back, but I can't seem to find the link anywhere now.

There's two Smoke-off-ski eps (Devine recordings camp) for sale on itunes and amazon now. 'The funky explorah' seems to be the best one, very grime-influenced.

Darned cockwombles.
yea so this was basically going to be a replacement for my sub.fm archive as audacity crashed halfway through my show this morning, basically everything i played, plus a bit extra, and no senseless shit chatting from myself

Recorded on 2 x 1210's // Serato SL3 // Pioneer DJM800

i highly recommend heaven and deep rohes, both personals of mine at the moment, apologies for posting this in this thread, i know its not strictly funky, but i thought the uk househeads would enjoy it

edit i know soundcloud links don't work properly so here it is

This is fucking brilliant - thanks. What's the tune at 1hr 39 - crazily good!
