thoughts on the new bangs and works? ive not heard it fully, but it doesnt really hit me like the last one did. even taking into account how diverse the scene is, it doesnt sound as footworky as i expected. one or two tracks sound quite a bit like grime and dubstep too, which was pretty weird. seems like a more outward looking selection.

Didn't Mike say he deliberately choose tunes that reminded him of 'nuum stuff as he thought it'd be easier for people outside the scene to relate to?

i dont know. but they seem a bit more... brostep-friendly this time? ie more jagged, caustic, harsher in general. i will prob like vol 1 more cos i already know what nuum stuff sounds like.

A couple of the Bangs & Works vol. 2 tracks that seem to sample film music have caught my attention:

Young Smoke - Psycho War
DJ T-Why - Orbits

I'm sort of ambivalent about both the planet mu comps tbh. I think its nice that there's a wide selection of producers on there but I get the impression some of the lesser stuff will date pretty quickly, as novel as it sounded at the time (Nate etc). But I've been listening to juke a lot lately after some time off, and its the Rashad and Spinn stuff I keep coming back to. especially Rashad's 'just a taste' album and his mix for rinse. I reckon that just jam video will be joining them too. They really are a cut above most of the other stuff on the planet mu comps.

vol 1 was 90% incredible imo. juke is pretty raw/rough around the edges so some of it will of course, once the 'newness' of it has died down, maybe cause some ppl to wonder what all the fuss was about, but the first bangs and works still has a lot of incredible tracks. rp boo's eraser is still just amazing.

Been listening to quite a lot of juke recently and I have some questions

- In Chicago does this stuff ever get played in a normal club setting with everyone getting drunk and jumping about or are the footwork battles the only places where it gets played out?

- Are there any girls involved in juke at all? Cos from the videos it looks like a massive sausage fest

- Do the dancers ever get any injuries/joint problems? It looks like it would put quite a lot of strain on the old ankles

the juke u listen to is pretty raw/rough around the edges. ghettotekz run this shit. it's an artform. pretty much everything else is a poor imitation tbh.

It does get played in clubs but not for too long. They have little sections of the night for those who wanna juke or footwork. Occasionally there are parties in clubs like Juekfest, 187 or whatever. Jukefest is dope! Happens everyyear - probably going to happen a few times a year now.

There are a lot of female footworkers (crystal being one of the coldest, she's with leaders of the new school. there's another 5-6 i've met and they're all dope! there are a couple female trackmakers (Jana Rush, Jlin)

Injuries aren't frequent believe it or not. Agee hurt his knee on tour but it's not that frequent.

DJ Taye's on Ustream atm

i know rashad and spinn are great and kind of like scene representatives at this point but id like to see some other guys come over here too. dj roc seems to favour a harder style so id like to see him. wish more footwork was on vinyl though - the bass sounds so good on record. i was wrong about bangs and works 2 being more brosteppy (though there are a few tracks that fit that), but the tracks do seem less raw/radical than the first album. that could be for a million reasons, maybe ive just gotten used to the sound, or maybe its just that theyre a little more polished/genre-y. not sure just yet.

nice little history lesson here, some DJ Funk mixtapes from 1999 just been put up on ravearchive.com. Now this is raw!
http://www.ravearchive.com/mixtapes/DJ_Funk

One track goes: "FOOTWORK FOOTWORK FOOT FOOT FOOTWORK..FOOTWORK FOOTWORK FOOT FOOT FOOTWORK.."

and some of it sounds like Rolf Harris goin acka with a wobbleboard :)
