KAN YAY OR KAN NAY? (The Kanye West Thread)

qwerty south

no use for a witticism
his output around his first two albums are great - lots of humour and inspiring energy.

even his later stuff has moments - more sonically than lyrically - 'love lockdown' sounds great on a big system

Havoc (Mobb Deep) produced that one.

Was oddly just watching an interview with him the other day about the shook ones beat, popped up in recommends.

Watched a bit of his DONDA album launch (recreating his childhood home, setting himself on fire, hundreds of extras in DONDA bulletproof jackets, having some sort of marriage ceremony with his supposedly estranged wife, etc.) – then watched this video with Kendrick Lamar (not sounding great to my ears) in it...

Just struck me that at the most mainstream level in rap there's this real vogue for artsy imagery – presumably Kanye's influence at work.

It's not even necessarily reflected in the music but visually its a sort of prog-rap era. Where perhaps the visuals matter more than the music. (Certainly seems to be the case with Kanye, who hasn't to my knowledge done anything particularly impactful musically in a long time.)

There was this in the news recently, too:

tired of artsy stuff in mainstream rap and pop and dance music tbh.
tbh im tired of entry level artsiness entering mainstream stuff in general. saw the new candyman film and it would be better if it wasnt being quite so understated.

Marilyn Manson and DaBaby. Apparently he also asked Trump to join them on stage. Ye really knows how to pick'em.

i cant stand his voice at this stage i hate it
Yeah, I listened to My Dark Twisted Fantasy again recently and I was like, wow, I really don't like him as a rapper. It was a bit of a revelation. There's nothing exciting about the sonics with his voice and his actually rhymes are quite boring. The bits of his records are the gospel vocals.

The album seems like a mess but there's some good stuff on there. Really like the beat/hook/sample of "Jesus Lord" and "Hurricane" (mainly the Lil Baby verse).

if you dont read too much into the kanye machine, there is always good stuff on his albums.
but i think i saw this album is almost 2 hours? that might be more kanye than i can stand in one go.
