The last twenty minutes of this are very satisfying in terms of pulling together all the threads, showing the existential angst of the sacrifice huge Jackman felt impelled to make and for that speech he makes about the world being solid and horrible and magic giving you a chance to mystify.

I can't remember now if the first time I saw it it was obvious that Christina bale was the assistant in the beard/hat because it seems so obvious to me now I find it hard to believe it wasn't. But maybe it was and that struck me as being a big twist.

Overall I think it's a clever story quite shoddily executed from the pov of dialogue/performance. The finale is where Nolan's strengths really come across.

I wasn't sure it was Bale, but I knew it would be important as it was blatantly obvious they were making a point of not giving you a good look at his face.

The characters are fundamentally masochistic—they each leave obvious improvements to their lives on the table. In Angier’s case, the option to create a single twin and co-exist (like Burton does) alongside him. In the case of the Burdon twins, the constant rotation between characters Burdon and Fallon, which wreaks havoc in their romantic lives. Then, at the film’s end, Burdon and Angiers tally the score of their rivalry by who gave up most in service of their craft.

Whatever you think of Nolan

He does make films that you always think 'yeah I'll stick that on' when you see it on a streaming platform

I've never thought that. I keep bookmarking Dunkirk when they have it on iPlayer then not watching it. It's come round at least three times now and still haven't seen it.

I wouldn't watch that one tbh

Maybe I'm talking shit

I like a few of them. Interstellar. Batman Begins. The Dark Knight (at a push,). Oppenheimer.

I guess I wouldn't seek out Inception or The Prestige but if they were on TV I'd end up watching them. And if someone suggested watching them I'd probably agree, albeit sadly.

I guess they're usually too intense to be good casual viewing.

I really ended up hating that new batman film (not by Nolan)

Was really into it up to a point and then started thinking this is a load of childish clichéd shit pretending to be serious and I watched it to the end cos I'd paid for it

They've done a spinoff Penguin series now with Farrell doing his De Niro act.

Is this considered "neo noir"?

The shadows, the colour grading, the ominous soundtracks, the obsession with moral ambiguity, the surveillance state, corrupt police and government etc...
