Probably worse is how many people know your shit though, ignoring AI. There is a friend of my Mrs who has basically played out an entire divorce and subsequent misadventures on facebook, pictures of the kids etc, motivational style quotes that are calling their dad a cunt in not so many words

What chance do the kids have when the whole school knows exactly what your ma's upto when they only added her to stick her in the group to collect footy subs

There’s a woman who we see during the school run who overshares videos of her kids all over the gaff, tiktok more than most. Tragic and horrifying

It all contributes to an overtly performative worldview and it seems everything defaults to the interactions being bred. Always filming their kids doing x/y/snot bubbles. Just let them play love

As parents we’ve managed to avoid this type, but they’re insidiously pervasive and don’t seem to have a sense of scrutiny, not one that you share anyway. Not kids as trophies, but dogs
the new transparency isnt caused by the network or the software, it's caused by the devices, which we have started to trust with our most intimate performances of every sort

Sure, dystopia is envisionable with or without conscious AI, but I do think that extropy is agnostic and to project dystopia onto it is to aid in its realization, rather than trying to balance out the possibilities for utopian and dystopian pathways for technology. I think its clear that both can play out in parallel.

we trust our phones and laptops and share with them more than our closest humans, isnt it?

we're in relationships with these gossipy hardware that seduce all our secrets out of us and then spread them around

Totally right here, and I think we are still early in reckoning with that as a collective, still have considerably more steam to let off along this learning curve, etc.

Personally I;ve been more concerned with what private actors are doing with my breached data than with that public sector actors as such are doing with it.

the software platforms are racing to catch up with the capabilities unleashed by our squeezing up against electronics in our every intimate and quotidian moment

hmm maybe i'm too pessimistic but then again i don't know what extropy means

A natural engine of behavioral discrimination, in which some behaviors feel more rewarded than others. Here I think there are plenty of ways that humans can impact this selection/discrimination (censorship, recommendation algorithms, etc), but by and large I think the whole thing is too unruly for virtually any human, or board of humans, to comprehensively administer

In this sense it just means the evolution of matter and energy, from before even molecules existed, all the way through single-celled organisms (already multiple orders of magnitude larger and more complex than molecules), to relatively titanic organisms like us (several orders of magnitude more), and even into artificial matter like computers and other technological objects.

Billions of years, seemingly agnostic to our senses of ethics and value, which I would argue we have to reconcile with what trends we can discern [beyond them].

What concerns me is the generation of kids trying to be youtubers and influencers but will inevitably fail

Like thats a huge weird digital kick in the balls for an entire generation for no fucking reason

These kids playing with toys on youtube from the age of four or five while their dad films it. Its so weird

The pessimism is certainly warranted, seeing as this tech itself is (largely) agnostic and only as good/ethical as the single-bottom-line businesspeople that operationalize it.

Weird yes, but I think there may be a robust and enduring market for youtubers, influencers, content producers etc, however silly or serious.

I actually admire those aspirations to a degree, wanting to carve out a little audience for exactly what you have to say, what you are good at, etc.

there are easy ways and people know where the switches are - to cut off the internet or our connections to it
