True, and while I think there will be a market for increasingly decentralized internet infrastructure, and the technology to deliver, I suppose there will always be chokepoints that can black out significant chunks of our access.

it's a backwards market though in that the marketers pay rather than the audience?
In some ways yeah, like how most of the podcasts and even most of the content I consume is free, enabled by ads and donations.

By donating to some of these content producers (i.e. BarakalypseNow, Good Times Bad Times, etc), one may get their name/handle listed at the credits, which may give the donor even more of a sense of involvement and communal solidarity.

Embarrassed to say that I only recently learned that, by skipping youtube ads, I deprive the content provider of that would-be revenue. I don't think the Senate Judiciary Committee's youtube channel needs that revenue, but other content providers can certainly benefit from it.

I sent Meta-Nomad fifty bucks a while back, and he took the time to thank me.

I dont think theres any way you can justify putting a five year old on youtube to try and be the lad from ryan's world while the parents try and cash in through the ad system, personally. Its a horrible trend

I actually admire those aspirations to a degree, wanting to carve out a little audience for exactly what you have to say, what you are good at, etc.

er well i know what you mean @Clinamenic but what exactly are @WashYourHands or @wild greens acquaintances good at? there's a lot of people who would love to be on reality tv and be famous celebrities (in gilded cages) but i can't imagine many things worse than having loads of people watching me on tv getting pissed off with everyone, calling them cunts etc. i don't know if you've heard about this programme "love island" on UK tv that has had a couple of people appearing on it commit suicide, not an isolated case, but there are new people signing up for new seasons every time.

the consumers always pay in the end

I do think there needs to be a consciousness-raising about personal data and how valuable it can be, even the seemingly banal details. Just data that broadens a training set.

it's weird how mobile devices are kind of outside normal economics - that "free" annual upgrade on your plan so your personal microcomputer can keep on harvesting you

Personally I'd be interested to see which products a ML module recommends to me because of my postings here.

google just announced a system for kids to request removing themselves from stuff uploaded about them

google just announced a system for kids to request removing themselves from stuff uploaded about them
and apple announced a (horribly misconceived) scheme for scanning all the images against a child porn database

Good to hear, haven't looked into it. Perhaps there are some auditing firms out there who can provide the public some assurance that the data really has been deleted. Short of that kind of oversight, I'd be skeptical about just how gone it is.
