This thread can be about LTJ Bunkem, whether I should or shouldnt go, past their prime artists, the bittersweet thrills of seeing aging favorites, the arc of djs as opposed to rock/pop stars, trends amongst djs whove seen the scene go from analog to digital and attempt to keep up

I saw Bunkem play a 3 hour set in Serbia once. The sun was coming up, I was coming up on a pill, I was young and bliss it was that dawn to be alive – granted all these conditions, I was convinced it was one of the best sets I'd ever seen. (Ah remember when I saw DJs enough to have sets I thought were the best? I remember.) He DJ'd drum n bass like it was house/techno, as I recall. Long blends, key matches, etc. He "took me on a musical journey".

Of course I might just have been off my tits and 22. Sigh.

I'd be interested to know what @luka makes of Bunkem.

I imagine he sees him as one of the war criminals who destroyed jungle by making it fashionable and "tasteful". (Though he will grant "Atlantis" its canonical spot.)

I saw him and Fabio maybe 5 years ago do a ‘Speed era’ set at some totally unsuitable venue in London. He played some great records.

I couldn’t be less interested in hearing him play current stuff unless I was in Serbia and everything was coming up but he’s pretty well set up sound wise to the digital rather than analog age. All v clean, interchangeable components.

This came out in 2007, the year I saw Bukem and my eyes rolled back in my head. So maybe he played it. In any case I rinsed some set or other with this on it.

LIQUID FUNK BAYBEE.

It was Luke that put me onto this brilliant mix when he posted it somewhere on here,

previously The Eclipse, what a fuckin mad house

heard Bunkem there must’ve been early 93 (venue hadn’t been renamed yet) and loafs of mixes online

can’t remember much other than bucket hats and about a thousand nutters breaking through their own psychic ceilings

@linebaugh i vote yes even if it’s a bit wank

my experience here is entirely with bands as opposed to DJs, with mixed results. there's not much worse than seeing an overweight, balding rock dude in tight trousers trying to recapture his youthful stage presence, so maybe old DJs come out ahead on that score since they are mostly hidden out of view.

lots of band reunions are sucky, but a few have been inexplicably amazing. the first stooges reunions shows in 2003 featuring both Ashton brothers blew my head off, and they were all even older than me at the time! another great one was Rocket from the Tombs (legendary pre-Pere Ubu/Dead Boys Cleveland band) in a small club.

At least the sad fat rock man knows he shouldnt try to develop his sound. I wanted to see claude young not too long ago but it seems now he's only intresred in playing elevator music with a 4 on the floor rythmn

Not that I think you'll get this at a Bunkum night but I do keep thinking I would like to reexperience the energy of a DNB/jungle night again.

Got a horrible feeling it would just be massively alienating and depressing though.

Actually despite all these protestations of being off my tits, I was probably very very serious at the time about DJ sets and was liable to knock a .5 off any set score if the DJ dared to drop anything I considered beneath me.
