Music you are prejudiced against

What actually is acid jazz? I mean, the very concept sounds horrific, I'll give you that, but I don't think I've ever heard any as far as I know. Could someone post some from Youtube?

Or will I regret having said that as soon as I click it?

I daren't.

In theory acid jazz should sound like Bitches' Brew, if literally taken. But...

Br*nd N*w H**vies.

no no no there is amazing acid jazz, deep and funky as hell, with sweet basslines and wicked flutes n shit. i'll see if i can find some yootoob

as there is amazing country. of course. that is such a banal, commonplace and obviously lame prejudice i wouldn't flaunt it if i were you.

like all prejudices of any kind, musical prejudice comes exclusively from ignorance and fear.

there is nothing wrong with ignorance, and i'm not suggesting that everyone should appreciate everything.

but the difference between the stupids and the wise is the complete dismissal of something rather than admission of having no experience / knowledge / understanding about it.

^definately, hate indie culture

I thought I hated indie till I brought that Rough Trade comp. It's a stomer! But generally, it is a bit boring...or rather its fans are.

I don't like dance music very much due to over-exposure since the 90s  - I'll get my coat.

I know that LB are from DK. They made a really good song "White Horse", so they are good musicians, yet when they make jamaican music, its ****!

I like this logic.

Bowie is a good musician.

Bowie made shit jungle.

Therefore Jungle is shit.

QED.

But of course.

Some of that new jazz or nu-cosmigroove or whatever (I'm thinking 90s) can be very cool rhythmically and otherwise. Which leads quite directly into Broken Beat, something else that people can have a tendency to pre-emptively dismiss as a whole. And then it's only a short distance to pungently trending Funky, see that recent Seiji mix for evidence. Not that it needs to be justified on those terms.

But really I know very little about that stuff other than enjoying some of what Gilles Peterson would play on the radio. Maybe a new dancefloor jazz / cosmigroove thread would be good if anyone has the expertise.

And country too of course. Country can be deep.

I got an early compilation by Baz Fe Jazz with tracks like this on.

Most of them seems like jazz with a funky bass, drum and hammond thrown in and the sleeve notes mention acid jazz played in the back room of raves.

But now when I hear the term I tend to think of BNH, Young Disciples, Galliano etc. Some of it was alright. (But I did use to fancy Ndea Davenport - heh heh)

UK hip hop
Major label indie (how'd that happen again?)
Rare groove fetishism
IDM post-95ish
Salsa
Grunge post-Nirvana

Edit: and (psy-) trance is objectively shit, so does that even count as prejudice?

I second this list. Especially the third one, only because that affects me more than the others (except maybe indie), a lot of my friends are into it - I can't imagine such an insipid fetish. Most of it isn't bad music, but it's often the bland and tedious that proves more offensive to me. Especially when they could be listening to Funky instead, but won't because of their own prejudices.

But prejudice is important. I'm actually trying to encourage more prejudices. That way I can enjoy the music I like much more, without a mass of contradictions (I am overly concerned about why I'm listening to what I'm listening to, who it makes me and what it all means).

When I only listened to classic minimal techno for a year, Basic Channel/Chain Reaction/Robert Hood/Ifach and the like, I was prejudiced against pretty much every other genre bar reggae. I've never enjoyed music so much as then. I was absolutely convinced I'd found the best music ever, and was free to explore its infinite subtleties, without being afraid I was missing out on lots of other good music...

But it couldn't last.

yes, hence why I'm trying to maintain my prejudice against guitar music. If I started liking it all, where would I begin?

Sick Boy

All about pride and egos
I am prejudiced against this new electro shit, but mostly because it has a total monopoly over Toronto's nightlife now. If only time travel were possible so I could go back in time and shoot whoever it was that galvanized indie kids to brave nightclubs (James Murphy?).

I like rock music, and I like dance music. But rarely, if ever, do these things work together.
