"dinner and a day hanging out with me"

for fuck's sake. this kickstarter stuff makes me queasy. Not the idea of crowdfunding in itself but all this perks bullshit, it reeks of desperation.

Also as far as I can tell pitching any musical project, if it has to be done at all, should be done behind closed doors to rich people. The whole thing just really bleeds all the magic out doesn't it.

I don't like the concept of the Kickstarter thing at all. I could understand it if you're talking about someone wanting to undertake a grandiose project- "We've wrote a massive symphony and want you to pay for the Orchestra's lunch and that"- but if you're a producer working alone then I'm sorry, I don't understand why you'd assume it's okay to have everyone pay for everything and take no risk yourself. There's a culture of risk and self-finance in "underground" music, and frankly I think it's a bit sad to start begging on the the internet so you can put a vinyl out. Go to work and put your own money in it like everyone else.

The idea that someone can write a personalised EP for you and cook you dinner for a couple of hundred quid is hardly something that I'd encourage anyone to do; as you said in the article, where's the integrity in it. Surely you want to take ownership and pride in your work as opposed to selling yourself off to all and sundry.

As an aside, I remember reading a few years ago that Luke from 2 Live Crew was selling personalised answerphone messages to finance something or other. (Tax bill maybe?). This is the one exception I could get with, but I wouldn't want DFRNT to do me one of those because I don't know who he is.

Good piece, you mentioned Ad Hoc and that whole thing really fucking irks me in particular, perhaps because I'm doing the same shit for free!

30,000 dollars for a glorified tumblr, the website layout, design and general journalism is terrible. Someone pointed out to me that the donors names aren't even listed, there's just this paragraph in 'about'

For those of you who are visiting the site for the first time, you should know that this communal endeavor wouldn't have been possible without the incredible support we received during our Kickstarter campaign. We wanted to pay tribute to the nearly 1,000 donors that contributed to our project by immortalizing them here. We're beyond grateful to all of you for bringing this to life for us, even if you chose not to donate and simply heard us out or spread the word.
