How has burial dated for you?

No it just sounds bad, even if there are interesting and good ideas. he should learn to produce something with more guts and something that isn't crumbly.

This is the indie proposition. I think its vile. People who don't demand tightness and excellence from their music are revolting.

That's where something flipped and he lost it for me. I've liked stuff since, but that was the first time he sounded plastic-y and 'fake'. Always wondered whether he got some new gear after 'Untrue' and that's what did it.

Yeah I've always assumed it's a bit deliberate, making it hard to navigate. Some of the stuff he's released after untrue is like two or three tunes string together as one.

Even Sweet Like Chocolate, Flowers and all the pop garage crossover hits just sound much better from a production standpoint. There is no denying this.

I said this earlier in the thread but xtra spice mikey/phineus II is a proper 90s amiga fetishist and his music still works because he isn't saying oh yeah I'm happy for my stuff to sound average.

The only genre where that sort of works is minimal techno of the berlin kind, but even then there is a lot of crap to trawl through, and the tyranny of choice inevitably kicks in.

although to be fair trance is a very south london (particularly brixton sound.) You don't get any of that round finsbury park way.

I'm sure now @Pearsall will tell me I'm wrong and there was a crusty finsbury park trance scene in 1997 but I'm sticking with trance being suitable for the sarf london temperament for now.

I don't remember going to too many hard trance club nights in North London back in the day, there were some at the Pleasure Rooms in Tottenham and also the Rocket in Islington, and also Camden Palace, but I guess that was more hard house nights. Tyssen Street Studios in Dalston, but I don't think that counts? But most of that scene was in South London for sure.

I just listened to some Fred Again tunes cos I didn't really know what he makes. I automatically hated him because he's posh, tall and popular and I thought I should hate him for more educated reasons.

Anyway from what I can gather he's really mining similar emo melancholy vibes as Burial did but in a more soppy sentimental (or warm and empathetic if you're not cynical about it) way.

The music is much blander than burial, too, and interestingly all his music has cover art depicting his friends, collaborators and self, and he incorporates a lot of vocal samples of friends and voice mails etc. (Compare burials facelessness, "darkness", etc.)

So although I'm not a fan (the one good one I've heard is the one that was in triangle of sadness that is his monster hit) I do think it's notable that he's so successful in part I'd suppose because he has this sort of comforting, hug ya pals type aesthetic going on. He seems to BARE his identity in a way that marks him out from burial and which is obviously a lot more palatable to a massive audience.
