One thing that is obviously quite noticable in the dancehall I've been listening to (which the algorithms are mostly picking for me, from a starting point of vybz kartal) is how sexually explicit it is. But it's also not pornographically-informed, in the way that US hip hop tends to be, or to a lesser extent how some of the newer grime stuff is (thinking of that popular stormzy tune for example where he talks about jizzing on someone's face).

There's quite a lot of really pornified stuff actually, especially from the younger lot, hence the tag in the thread "fellatio stats" in relation to Skillibeng.

thanks, am pretty locked into this sound at the moment, all recommendations welcome. although you're right, on first listen this first one you linked to does sound a bit bland as you say. vocally it sounds a bit like US R&B, or FKA Twigs or something, a bit clean.

i'm not that opposed to the filth i suppose. it was more of an observation than a complaint. an incorrect one apparently.

the anti-gay stuff sits a bit worse with me than the porn i guess. that Romping Shop tune from ten years ago is a good example, there's just a gratuitous bit right at the start which does slightly sour what is otherwise a really euphoric love song. i know this is old territory that has probably been well covered.
