Listening now, never heard it before as far as I know. Let's be honest I've totally lost control of this thread... at the start I was running it, now it's running me... I'm in too deep and... er... yeah that kinda electro-ey bit does seem to remind me of what I may have had in mind when I started this thread. Probably that one nails it more than most.

In my original post I was really thinking of a kinda anti-post-punk sound - or as much as possible within the confines of electro and pop. By which I mean that I think of post-punk as spiky, monochrome and knowing, while I'm asking I suppose for something more naive and colourful etc though perhaps achieving that totally different feel by sounding not that dissimilar.

this seems like its from an alternate universe, but one where humans developed in more or less the same way and most things are the same. but things are just slightly off. like that crazy russian film where they find another planet but its just full of medieval humans torturing each other. It's strange to think the people in this video are people just like us. and it's not even that long ago. But their whole worldview seems completely different. I don't understand. Did irony exist in the 80s? How did people react to things like this at the time? Was the UK this weird then or just america? Really love the song btw

Great bit of electro history - Factory Records went bananas when they heard Divine's "Love Reaction" and sent Bobby Orlando a legal notice. Which Bobby O clearly threw in the bin, because he then produced the song below. Think what I love about this so much is how he tried to throw the lawyers off the scent by pitch-bending the synth choir 'aaahhh's a bit 😀 Would have loved to have seen the judge's face when Bobby O mounted his defence, but, AFAIK, Factory blew its potential legal fees on making the Blue Monday 12" as cheap as possible anyway, so it never went to court.

There are at least two adaptations of the book (which was written by the Strugatsky brothers who also wrote Roadside Picnic, adapted by Tarkovsky into Stalker).
The first adaptation which is from about 1990 is, I believe (although I've not seen it), a more straightforward adaptation of the novel - noteworthy perhaps cos it has Werner Herzog in it as an actor. The second version, which is probably the one you're thinking of, made in about 2013 by Aleksei German, is totally fucking mental. A horrible slimy, grimy nightmare of hideous troglodytes wallowing in psychedelic filth. I recommend it although it's a tough watch because it's just so dirty and dark - you'll feel you need a bath afterwards - and also cos it's really hard to follow with very little of it explained. I was lucky to watch it with a couple of Russians, one of whom knew something about the book and could shed a little light on it.
